Cultural Afternoon
We have finished today with the most wonderful gift. Celebrating the rich tapestry that is becoming the community of St. Monica’s, we’ve celebrated with a Cultural Day. The students were immersed in the colour and the flavours from the cultures and homes of those in our community.
Thank you to every family that participated today. All the students were excited about this event; we are the richer for having you in our community.
Australian Mathematics Competition
Recently, a number of our students took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), one of the largest school-based mathematics competitions in the world. The AMC challenges students to apply their problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking in creative and unfamiliar contexts.
We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated, showing persistence, logical thinking and a willingness to tackle challenging problems. Several of our students achieved outstanding results, receiving Certificates of Distinction, Credit and Proficiency, which is a wonderful reflection of their hard work and dedication.
Congratulations to all our AMC participants on their fantastic efforts. You have represented our school with pride and demonstrated a love of learning that inspires us all. 🌟
Prep News
in Prep this week, we watched 'Mixed', a book by Arree Chung that shares a beautiful story of differences and acceptance. It also features our current sound /x/!
You can view the story here if you would like to:
We then spent time mixing the primary colours to create our very own unique colour, which became a new character for the book. We thought about what characteristics, feelings and emotions this new character would have, and then made one out of the colours we mixed. So much fun!
Grade 1
Jesus the Good Shepherd
In Religion, Grade 1 students explored the parable of The Lost Sheep. Together, we discussed how Jesus cares for each one of us and how God’s love means no one is ever forgotten.
To help bring the story to life, students responded creatively using a variety of materials. Some used craft resources to design sheep and shepherds, while others built scenes from the story using LEGO. The children enjoyed retelling the parable through their creations and reflecting on how they, too, are precious and loved by God.
Grade 1 Inquiry
Grass head update: We sent our grass heads home recently. They were about due for their first hair cut!
We also finished off our inquiry unit with making our own habitat dioramas. Students chose an animal each and then had to design and create a habitat that met the basic needs of their living thing.
Here are a few different examples of some of the creative masterpieces.
Grade 2 News
In our Inquiry unit in Grade 2 this term, we have been learning about the different types of technology we have in our lives today. We have learnt how to be safe online and looked at how technology has changed the way we live our lives.
To summarise our learning, the students have been designing and creating their very own robot. Our robots are all very creative and have been designed to make our lives easier.
Indi’s robot has hands and fingers that move so that it can pick up rubbish.
Sophie’s robot has a head that can turn around and is designed to clean houses.
Maya’s robot has a moving arm and is designed to pick up rubbish.
3/4 News
3/4B would like to thank 2S for coming up and giving us a hand with the creation of our rainbow mural when we celebrated RUOK? Day. It was fantastic to invite them upstairs to our classroom. We spent time together working on the mural, checking in and getting to know each other another just a little bit better. We think our mural looks amazing.
3/4B have started our new class novel, Charlotte's Web and so far we are loving it. Today we spent some time with our learning partners reading Chapter 3.
5/6 Unit News
This week, our Year 5/6 students have been presenting their Inquiry drama pieces, conducting BTN style news interviews on various biome topics. It's been great to see some budding new reporters in the making.
We will continue our novel "The Grandest Bookshop in the world" into next term and are very excited to be having the author, Amelia Mellor come visit us in week 2 of next term.
Teachers Vs Grade 6 Basketball/Netball
Our Year 6 students took on the teachers in the annual basketball and netball game which was plenty of fun and enjoyed by all the students and staff.
