U14 Girls Hockey State Championships

During the July holidays, Mia (Year 8), Emma (Year 9), Ori (Year 9), Siany (Year 8), and Nina (Year 9), proudly represented the Cairns Division 1 Team at the U14 Girls Hockey State Championships in Toowoomba.

The girls played brilliantly throughout the tournament, facing some very strong teams from across Queensland. Their first win came on Day 2 — and they went on to finish 7th place out of 10 teams in Division 1 (and 25 teams overall) with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses.

And gosh, was it chilly! One morning it was just 3°C (felt like -4°C) when they arrived at the fields — yet the girls powered through the cold, rain, and sunshine without missing a beat.

We are so proud of you all — you represented Cairns, your team, and St Mary’s with resilience, teamwork, and determination.

Well done, girls — what an achievement!

First Followers Shield - St Mary’s v St Andrew’s Cricket Gala Day

St Mary’s proudly competed in Round 2 of the First Followers Shield, sending three teams: Junior Boys, Senior Boys, and a Girls team. All teams played with great skill and determination. The boys showed significant improvement from Round 1, fighting hard despite their defeats, whilst the girls secured a well-deserved win.

It’s clear that St Mary’s has a strong depth of talented junior cricketers, and we are excited to see their continued growth and success!

BDO Hockey Carnival

Last Tuesday was a fantastic day for all our St Mary’s hockey teams! We proudly entered teams in the Junior Girls, Senior Girls, and Senior Boys categories, and each team competed with determination and skill.

All three teams finished 2nd in their pools, advancing to the finals where they secured an impressive 3rd place overall.

Special congratulations to Lacey (Year 12), named Senior Girls MVP, and Adrian (Year 12), named Senior Boys MVP — an outstanding recognition of their talent and leadership.

Well done to all players and coaches for representing St Mary’s with pride!

National Community Hero Award

We are incredibly proud to share that Luka (Year 7) has been named one of only five recipients (nationwide, under 30 category) of the Athletics Australia 2025 Community Hero Award, proudly sponsored by Chemist Warehouse.

Over the past six months, Luka has faced the challenge of being sidelined from all sport and physical activity — including her beloved running — due to a high-grade stress fracture. Despite this, she has shown remarkable resilience and sportsmanship beyond her years.

Luka has continued to attend four training sessions each week, staying connected to her run squad community, PACE. What began as supporting the team as a timekeeper soon grew into Luka stepping up as an assistant coach, even leading her own group. She has also cheered on her friends at multiple events, embodying true team spirit.

For just 12 years old, Luka’s commitment, leadership, and positivity are nothing short of inspiring. We are so proud of you, Luka — a true community hero.
