Year One Assembly Highlights

Last Friday, the Year One cohort held its second assembly of Term Three. Basil from 1C proudly delivered a respectful Acknowledgement of Country, reflecting the thoughtful work we’ve done during morning circles and our ongoing respect for, and connection to, First Nations peoples.

We also congratulated our RISE Award recipients, who consistently demonstrate our school values and inspire their peers to do the same.

1E students showcased their learning in Literacy by sharing their writing about Fun Day moments and performing When I Grow Up from the Matilda musical, which was adapted from Matilda by Roald Dahl. It is clear that the 1E had enjoyed reading together as a class.

To close the assembly, the entire Year One cohort was presented with a RISE Award in recognition of their effort and achievement during Book Week, where their displays were named the overall winner.

Literacy -Phonics Plus

Students have been reading and spelling both one-syllable and multisyllabic words featuring the grapheme–phoneme correspondences (GPCs) for the ‘ow’ and ‘ou’ sounds.

They were also introduced to the new prefix ‘un-’, which means ‘not’ or 'undo'. Students continued to strengthen their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension through reading passages and writing dictated sentences.

Meerkat Production

Students thoroughly enjoyed the Meerkat Production of The Garden of Broken Things by Freya Blackwood. The 40-minute musical featured original songs and creative puppetry, capturing the imagination of the Year One students.

Through the performance, students explored the story’s themes alongside the main character, Sadie, and deepened their curiosity through discussions about how the show was created — including the making of the puppets and props.

Year One Fun Day

Last Wednesday, Year One students had the opportunity to join a camp experience day filled with engaging and educational activities alongside peers from across the cohort. It was a joy to see students forming new connections and friendships throughout the day.

Highlights of the day included a Magic Show by Tam I Am, a Coding session, Developmental Play, Fun with Food, and an exciting Reptile Encounters session. These activities allowed students to explore curriculum areas in ways not typically offered in the classroom. They were questioning, exploring, and actively absorbing new knowledge — sparking curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
