In Through The Nose, Out Through The Nose

Over the past few weeks in PE we have incorporated some breathing challenges into our mobility warm ups. Our main focus; in through the nose, out through the nose. Simple!

Inspired by researcher James Nestor and his book Breathe, we have started to introduce students from Prep - Year 6 to the idea that breathing through the nose instead of the mouth can have many great physiological effects and also provide mental clarity.

“The nose will slow down air, it will pressurize air, it filters air, there’s more nitric oxide released through the nose than there is through the mouth — about 6 times more — and that slower feed of air, that filtered air, allows our bodies to absorb a lot more oxygen with each breath, [rather] than just huffing and puffing out of our mouths,”. - James Nestor

We have noticed a positive uptick in student’s focus and behaviour since our nose breathing venture began. So over the coming weeks, whenever you remember, remind yourself (and your kids!) to breathe in through the nose and out through the nose for a simple health hack that can also bring calm.
