Year 6 News

From Ben F, Year 6 teacher

Oh the splendour !

Last week was an incredibly busy week in year 6 in fact some students had the privilege of attending 3 excursions and also representing NMPS at interschool basketball. Last Monday and Thursday the entirety of year 6 visited the State Library and NGV Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square as part of our history unit.

I didn’t expect to be moved by a building.

Walking through Swanston Street, I’d passed it countless times - the grand facade with its Corinthian columns and stone steps always seemed like a backdrop to the city’s rhythm. But today I stepped inside.

The moment I entered, the noise of Melbourne faded. The air felt different - relevant almost. I wandered through the galleries, past portraits and relics of a time I hadn’t lived but somehow felt connected to. Then I found myself in the La Trobe Reading Room.

I stood there stunned. The dome soared above me like a Cathedral of knowledge. Light poured in from the oculus, illuminating rows of wooden desks and green lamps that glowed like quiet sentinels. People sat in silence, immersed in books, laptops and thoughts. It was as if time had slowed, inviting me to breathe, to think, to be.

I didn’t come here with a purpose. But I left with something intangible - a sense of awe, a reminder that beauty and history can live in the same place as curiosity and learning. The library wasn’t just a place to read. It was a place to feel.

Last Tuesday the year 6’s had the opportunity to attend a concert at Uni High and to see some former NMPS alumni strut their musical chops on the stage (Also a cunning plan by the Uni High Music Department to get future students to take up an instrument). Chloe from 6D recounts her experience of the concert.

Entering a lovely big room with an abundance of instruments, I walked in expecting to be wowed, but little did I know I was going to experience something way better than being wowed. As I sat and waited, I noticed many different instruments. Trombones, clarinets, flutes, drums, trumpets, violins, cello, violas, double base, pianos and whole sections of percussion and brass. Before I could say anything the conductor told us the band in front of us were going to play ‘Colours of the wind’ from Pocohontas.

Suddenly I was enlightened by a calm and pretty tune, the tune danced around the room covering every empty space there ever was. I was sitting in my chair but all I wanted to do was dance and hum along. But I grasped a hold of myself making sure I didn't move. After a few minutes I was sad to realise the beautiful music had ended, but I wasn't sad for long because a new group came and began playing. Group after group came on the stage, I watched, observed and even recognised some familiar faces. Each ensemble was amazing, all different and great. The level of technique all these musicians had amused me. All the effort and time put into this was the best! Going back to school, I wondered what instrument I would play. I am now so excited to go to Uni High and choose an instrument next year!
