Term 4 Topic - Positive Gender Relations
The beginning of term 4 marks the start of our final Respectful Relationship’s topic - Positive Gender Relations across LPS. Learning activities within this topic focus on building an understanding of the effects of gender-based violence and focus on the standards associated with respectful relationships in an age appropriate way. Students develop an understanding that verbal, physical, emotional, financial and sexual forms of violence are harmful, and that these forms of violence can also be gendered. They learn about safe and unsafe behaviours, consent and their rights to bodily autonomy. They practice strategies they can use to assert their rights to bodily autonomy to be free from coercion or violence. They develop self-care, peer support, peer referral and help-seeking skills that they can use in response to situations involving gender-based violence within family, peer, school, community or online relationships.
Why focus on gender and respectful relationships?
Gender-based violence is violence that targets individuals or groups on the basis of their gender. It includes any act that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to someone based on gender role expectations and stereotypes. Gender-based violence remains a widespread problem in Australia, with significant social, health, economic and other consequences. The experience of gender-based violence can have serious mental health outcomes for young people of all genders. Helping students to understand the potentially negative effects of dominant gender expectations can assist them to work on changing those that limit opportunities, reduce equity, contribute to poor health, or lead to violence. We encourage all parents to ask your children what they have you been learning in RR lessons and continue conversations around their learning in this area at home. If you require further support please see the details below.
