Year 5

A Golden Day at Sovereign Hill

On Friday 29th August, Year 5 students headed to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat for a trip back in time. While the weather was cold and wet, the students showed great resilience and enthusiasm, making the most of every activity planned for the day.

They had the chance to experience life in Ballarat during the 1850s gold rush. The highlight for many students was gold panning, where they were lucky enough to strike it rich and come home with small pieces of gold. The group also watched demonstrations of gold being melted and poured into a gold bar and explored an underground gold mine.

Beyond the gold fields, students enjoyed a variety of historical activities. They tried their hand at old-fashioned nine-pin bowling, explored the shops, and watched fascinating demonstrations, including how old-fashioned lollies are made, a blacksmith at work, and candle making.

Following a delicious dinner at Lazy Moes in Ballarat, we returned to school weary, but very happy. While our enthusiastic and funny bus drivers and two wonderful parent volunteers worked hard alongside staff to make the day special, it was the incredible Year 5 students who were responsible for its true success. We were so proud of their positive attitudes and resilience, and we were thrilled to hear so many people comment on their excellent behaviour throughout the day.

Living Wax Museum

The Year 5’s have been working hard on their Australian Gold Rush projects, which will come to life for the Living Wax Museum next week, on Tuesday 16 September.

All other EHPS classes have been invited to visit the Living Wax Museum and learn about the characters our Year 5 students have researched and will present.
