R U Ok Day was acknowledged on the 11th of September, and the theme for 2025 was "You can ask R U Ok? Any Day”. The yellow colour for R U OK Day represents hope and support.
Sometimes when someone is looking unhappy, not their usual selves or even angry – it is good to ask in a genuinely caring tone of voice “Are you Okay?”. Be real in how you ask the question. This will really help a person know that you are recognising that they aren’t okay and that you are willing to help and support them.
Equally, and just as importantly, it is totally okay to say “No, I’m not okay”. Everyone has their days when they aren’t okay. It is not being weak to say I’m not okay. We go to a doctor when we aren’t feeling well, and it’s the same with Mental Health. Sometimes we do need to see someone to have a talk and find some new skills to manage when things are really stressful. Sometimes just having a chat to someone, and sharing your problems is helpful too. As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved.
If someone does open up about their problems to you, you do not have to have the answers to their questions or problems. The very fact that you are supporting them is helpful and encouraging to the person. You could even suggest going to talk to Tyrone, Pip or another staff member together.
