Year 8 Coding
Earlier this month, the current coding classes headed to Yarra Ranges Tech School to partake in interactive coding activities with robots. One session challenged students to work with cars, getting them to navigate around a course, while avoiding other cars by programming multiple sensors. The second session had students programming a robot arm to pick up blocks and move them to a conveyor belt, as you would see in large scale warehouses. Students were able to all successfully pick up a single block and they were quickly able to modify the code to enable it to pick up multiple. Their biggest challenge came when attempting to pull blocks from different areas. Various groups came up with unique solutions to this challenge, but also had to learn how to navigate the unpredictable nature of the robot arm they were working with. Many students were frustrated that they couldn’t continue to successfully solve this problem. The instructors on the day with impressed with their perseverance, as were we.

Year 9 Wood
In Year 9 Wood, the boxes that students have been working on is nearing completion. Currently students are busy attaching hinged lids to their boxes, showing extra care to ensure the lids will seal flush. They are also making some finishing touches, by sealing gaps in joins and applying varnish to even out their final products.
