Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

It has been wonderful to welcome all our boarders back after the holidays, with a real sense of energy and positivity around the boarding houses. Hearing the boys’ stories from the break has been great, and they have eased back into the routines of school life smoothly, making for a successful first week of Term 2.

Sport is already shaping up to be a major highlight this term. Nearly all of our boarders have committed to representing the school in either rugby or football, which is incredibly pleasing to see. Beyond the competitive element, this level of involvement is a strong contributor to the boys’ wellbeing, helping them stay active, connected and balanced. The excitement was evident over the first weekend, with trial games taking place on Friday and Saturday. For many of our boarders, Term 2 is their favourite sporting season of the year.

This term has also seen our boarding community grow, with four new boarders joining us – three in Year 10 and one in Year 11. I have been particularly impressed by the way the boys have welcomed these new lads, demonstrating the inclusive and welcoming ‘family spirit’ we value in Marist Ashgrove boarding.

We are equally delighted to welcome new staff into our team. Mrs Bella Say has joined boarding as a Senior Supervisor in Br Terence Residence, and Braydon O’Sullivan has commenced as a Boarding Supervisor. Both have already made a positive impression, and we are very pleased to have them supporting our boys.

The first weekend back was filled with a great range of recreation opportunities. Alongside sport trials, the boarders enjoyed a variety of activities, including a trip to the cinema, a karaoke night and sleepover in the Draney Theatre and a Sunday beach trip to Mooloolaba. These shared experiences play an important role in helping the boys relax, build friendships and feel at home in boarding.

I am also pleased to share that our weekday afternoon recreation program is back to full capacity this week. On afternoons when the boys don’t have sports training, they can choose from a wide range of activities including cooking, mountain biking, pickleball, dog walking, Boarder Blitz lawn mowing, visiting the elderly, golf, gardening and art club. There is certainly no shortage of options, and it will be great to see the boys making the most of what is on offer.

Term 2 is shaping up to be a busy and rewarding one, and we look forward to seeing the boys continue to grow, challenge themselves and enjoy all aspects of boarding life.
