Homework

📖 Literacy

This term, our Grade 4 students will be studying the novel Storm Boy as part of our literature unit. Throughout this study, students will develop their writing skills by expanding sentences to include details about ‘who’, ‘when’ and ‘where’, including the use of prepositions. They will also experiment with sentence structure by moving adverbials to the beginning or end of sentences, and combine sentences using coordinating conjunctions, pronouns and commas. In addition, students will describe the characters and settings from the text.

In addition, students will be learning about information reports, where they will explore the purpose, structure and key features of this text type. This learning will support students in planning and writing their own information report, which will connect to our Knowledge Rich unit for the term.

➗ Maths

This term, our Grade 4 students will focus on five key areas in Mathematics: decimals, length and area, 2D shape, data representation, and revisiting addition and subtraction.

While exploring decimals, students will learn to represent, write and place tenths and hundredths on a number line, as well as order and rename decimals. In the area of length and area, they will focus on measuring, comparing and ordering using the metric system, along with calculating perimeter and area.

In 2D shape, students will classify two-dimensional shapes, identify common shapes, create and recognise symmetrical shapes, and explore both line and rotational symmetry. When studying data, they will compare and evaluate graphical representations and identify appropriate questions to ask about the data.

In addition and subtraction, students will build on their learning from Term 1 by using fact families, exploring the commutative property, determining equivalence, and finding equivalent number sentences.

🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units

This term, our Knowledge Rich unit will explore the meaning and historical context of service, courage, mateship and loyalty. Students will learn about the formation and role of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War I, as well as the significance of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 and the Battle of Fromelles in 1916, including its impact on Australia.

They will also investigate the purpose and significance of the Victoria Cross for Australia, along with case studies of Australian recipients across different conflicts. The unit will extend to Australia’s role in World War II and highlight the important contributions of Australian women during wartime.

Students will then explore examples of modern Australian service and sacrifice, and consider how national identity is shaped through shared values and remembrance.

🌿 Wellbeing

This term, in Wellbeing, students will be exploring the 4R’s topics of stress management and help-seeking. They will look at different situations that may cause stress and learn a range of strategies to help manage these challenges and solve problems in a positive way. They will identify when and how to seek support from others.

🏅 Sport in Grade 4

Sport will begin in Week 2, with our focus this term being soccer. Similar to last term, students will first learn and practise a range of skills and techniques before applying these in a competition at the end of the unit.
