In Term 2, students will begin an exciting journey around Australia through our class text, Off We Go Around Australia. As we follow a family travelling across the country, students will explore a variety of unique locations, including the Murray River, the Flinders Ranges, the Great Barrier Reef, the Snowy Mountains, Coober Pedy, Cottesloe Beach and Monkey Mia, among many others.
Throughout this unit, students will build their vocabulary and develop their understanding of noun groups, including how to use appositives to expand their sentences. They will also practise using the four sentence types - statements, questions, commands and exclamations, to create more engaging and varied writing. At the text level, students will apply these skills to complete an explanation piece on waterfalls.
In the second half of the term, students will read Finding Our Heart. This narrative non-fiction text introduces the Uluru Statement from the Heart in a way that is accessible and meaningful for young readers. The unit will support students in developing an understanding of Australia’s history and encourage thoughtful reflection on how we can work towards a shared future.
As part of this unit, students will complete a book report on Finding Our Heart. They will focus on using the correct text structure and will engage in the full writing process, including planning, drafting, editing and publishing.
