Learning In Action - Looking Ahead

📖 Literacy

Literature

It has been fantastic to see how quickly students have settled back into routines and reconnected with their learning. The first week has been full of energy, with students confidently picking up where they left off. In Literacy, we will begin by exploring the informative picture book ‘City of Light’. Through this text, students will develop their understanding of historical fiction by responding to the story and identifying key features that reveal its purpose. They will expand their vocabulary by learning and using Tier 2 words from the text, helping to strengthen both their reading and writing.

In writing, students will focus on sentence structure by using conjunctions such as because, but, and so to complete and extend their ideas. They will practise combining simple sentences to create compound sentences and apply these skills by writing their own sentences inspired by visual prompts. It’s set to be a rich and engaging term of learning, and we’re excited to see students grow in confidence and creativity!

Over the term we will also be covering the following books:

  • Curiosity: The Mars Rover
  • The Lorax
  • The Boy and the Elephant

Knowledge Rich

In Term 2, our Grade 2 students will continue building their knowledge through two engaging Knowledge Rich units. In the first unit, ‘Uluru’, students will explore where Uluru is located and how it formed its unique shape and colour, while also learning why it is deeply significant to the traditional owners, the Anangu people. They will investigate the natural ecosystem of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, including the plants and animals that live there, and how the Anangu have cared for this environment over time. Students will also consider the impacts of tourism and discuss why it is important to protect this special place.

In the second unit, ‘Ancient Greece’, students will travel back in time to discover why Athens is known as the birthplace of democracy and compare daily life in Athens and Sparta. They will learn about key historical events such as the Battles of Marathon and Thermopylae, explore Greek gods and goddesses, and uncover the origins of the Olympic Games. The unit will also introduce some of Ancient Greece’s greatest thinkers and examine why Alexander is remembered as “Alexander the Great.”

➗ Maths

This term, our Grade 2 students have begun their mathematics learning with a focus on place value. They have been working on regrouping collections up to 1000 and developing efficient counting strategies, such as skip counting by 10s and 100s to determine totals. As the unit progresses, students will continue to build their understanding by representing and ordering numbers using numerals and number lines, as well as recognising the important role of zero as a placeholder in our number system.

Later in the term, students will explore measurement using informal units, including length, mass, and capacity. There will also be a strong focus on addition and subtraction strategies. Students will practise using number lines, bridging to 10, and partitioning numbers into tens and ones, as well as being introduced to written algorithms to support their problem-solving.

😊 Wellbeing

As we wrapped up Term 1, students completed the Grade 2 Friendology program, where they developed valuable skills for navigating challenging friendship situations. Through discussions and activities, they explored ways to respond to conflict, communicate effectively, and maintain positive relationships with their peers. Throughout the year we will continue to draw upon the strategies and skills learnt through the Friendology program.

In Term 2, we are excited to begin our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program. We will start by focusing on stress management, helping students understand what stress is, how it can affect them, and exploring practical strategies to manage it in healthy and positive ways. Later in the term we will also begin learning about help seeking behaviours, learning about why help seeking is an important skill and how  students can help their friends and family.
