Interschool Sport Competitions

Term 1 success and Term 2 teams selection done!

Hola familias de Newlands,

We are pleased to share that the teams for the Term 2 Interschool Sport Competition have now been finalised, while also celebrating the fantastic achievements of our Term 1 teams.

We had a very high level of interest in the recent tryouts, with many students eager to participate. This is something we are really proud of, as it reflects a strong and growing engagement in physical activity across our school. At the same time, it also meant that, unfortunately, not all students could be offered a place in a team.

Another factor to consider is how much our school has grown in recent years. In the past, when our student numbers were smaller, most students who were interested were able to participate in interschool sport. Now, with a significantly larger Year 5 and 6 cohort, opportunities such as interschool sport, leadership roles, and performance opportunities have become more competitive.

Team selection was based on observations from all specialist teachers during the tryouts on Tuesday 17th March. Students participated in a range of activities for each sport, allowing us to assess different skills and attributes relevant to game play. A second tryout session was also held on Monday 23rd March for students who were unable to attend the initial session. Many students demonstrated strong ability across both days, which made the selection process very challenging.

We understand that team selection can sometimes be disappointing. Please know that this process is never easy, and decisions are made carefully, based on what we observe during tryouts and the needs of each team.

While looking ahead to Term 2, it is also important to recognise the success and effort of our Term 1 teams, who set a great example for all students.

A huge congratulations to our Bat Tennis Girls team, who have had an outstanding season and have qualified for the finals. The team showed excellent consistency and teamwork throughout the competition, winning every game except for one. This is a remarkable achievement and reflects their effort, commitment, and positive attitude each week. The finals will take place towards the end of Term 3, and more details will be shared with families soon.

Our Bat Tennis Boys team also had a very strong season, finishing second on the ladder and demonstrating great skill and competitiveness.

In Softball, our boys team finished second without losing a single game, recording only wins and two draws — an excellent example of consistency and teamwork.

Similarly, our Basketball Boys team had a fantastic season, finishing second with only one loss and showing great determination throughout.

Our Softball Girls and Basketball Girls teams also represented the school with great effort and sportsmanship. While they finished around the middle of their respective ladders, they showed resilience, teamwork, and a strong willingness to keep improving each week.

To those students selected for Term 2 — congratulations. We look forward to seeing you represent Newlands with effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

To those who were not selected this time — we encourage you to keep developing your skills and to continue being involved in physical activity. There will be more opportunities ahead, and we would love to see you try again in the future.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
