Flexible Grouping
At our school, we are committed to ensuring that every student is supported and challenged at their point of need. One of the ways we do this is through flexible grouping.
Flexible grouping means that students work in different groups at different times, depending on their learning needs and the focus of the lesson. These groups are not fixed and may change regularly as students develop new skills and confidence. At times, this approach may also involve multi-age groups, where students from different year levels work together. This provides additional opportunities for targeted teaching and allows students to learn from and alongside a broader range of peers.
In Prep to Year 2, flexible grouping is a key part of our Reading program through Read Write Inc. (RWI). Students are grouped based on their current reading and phonics knowledge, allowing teachers to deliver explicit, targeted instruction that supports each child’s progress in learning to read.
In Years 3–6, our focus is on flexible grouping in Mathematics. Students may work in a variety of groups to practise skills, explore concepts more deeply, or receive additional support when needed. This helps to build strong understanding and confidence in problem-solving.
Flexible grouping supports all learners by:
- providing targeted teaching at the right level
- allowing students to move between groups as they grow
- building confidence through achievable challenges
- encouraging collaboration across different groups and, at times, year levels
ensuring all students continue to make progress
This approach helps us create a responsive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
