Year 2 Highlight

In Mathematics, our Year 2 students have been developing their understanding of time and how it is represented in everyday life. Students have been learning to read an analogue clock, focusing on recognising and telling the time for o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. To support their learning, students have been using classroom clocks and hands-on activities to demonstrate different times and explain their thinking.

We have also been exploring transformations of shapes. Students have been investigating how shapes can move using flips, slides and turns. As part of this, they have been learning about quarter (¼), half (½), three-quarter (¾) and full turns, as well as understanding the difference between clockwise and anticlockwise rotations.

In addition, students have been building their understanding of how time is organised by exploring calendars. They have been identifying dates, days, weeks and months, and discussing how these connect to the seasons. Students have also begun working out the time between events, helping them understand how we measure and plan time in daily life.

It has been wonderful to see students using practical materials, discussions and problem-solving to strengthen their understanding of these important mathematical concepts.
