Year 9 HaSS Excursion

West Australian Army Museum
On Thursday, 28 and Friday 29 May, Year 9 HASS students visited the West Australian Army Museum in Fremantle. The excursion compliments the students' learning of World War One and is aligned with the West Australian Curriculum, exploring historical perspectives, citizenship, and national identity.
Upon arrival, students were greeted by museum staff many of whom are former service personnel. They offered a guided introduction to the site and the galleries. Students explored a wide range of exhibits spanning Australia’s involvement in conflicts and displays included uniforms, medals, personal letters, weapons, and military equipment, each telling a unique story of service and sacrifice.
One of the most impactful sections focused on World War I, where students examined firsthand accounts from Western Australian soldiers who served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. This allowed students to engage directly with historical sources, encouraging deeper critical thinking about the human experiences behind the war.
Another highlight was the World War II gallery, which showcased the role of Australian forces. Students learned about significant events such as the defence of Darwin and the Kokoda Track campaign, gaining insight into the strategic importance of Western Australia during the war years.
