This week marks a significant event in our calendar: Catholic Schools Week 2026. It is a time dedicated to celebrating the distinct identity, achievements, and vital mission of Catholic education. Having spent 18 years in Catholic Education—11 of those within the Armidale Diocese—I have seen firsthand how these weeks unite us. Now, looking through the lens of my first two terms as Principal at St Joseph’s, I am deeply moved by how vividly our own community embodies what Catholic education is truly about.
Our system’s vision is to support young people to realise a hope-filled future. As a small Catholic school in a rural setting, we carry this mission with fierce pride. We firmly believe that a child’s capacity to achieve a hope-filled future should never be dictated by their postcode. Rural landscapes do not limit a child's potential; rather, they foster a unique resilience, grounded in a Christ-centred learning community that promotes true human flourishing.
We see this flourishing every day in our classrooms and on our sporting fields, driven by our school motto: "Whatever we do, we do it well." This commitment to excellence is deeply rooted in our foundations, laid down by the Sisters of St Joseph, who knew that education is the ultimate vehicle for opportunity and equality.
In Catholic education, our pursuit of academic excellence is inseparable from our commitment to human dignity. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, I am reminded of a profound truth shared by Pope Leo (2025):
"Literacy and numeracy are a matter of dignity before they are a matter of competence."
When we hold high expectations for our young people in literacy and numeracy, we are doing far more than building academic skills. We are giving them the dignity to navigate the world with confidence, to advocate for themselves, and to fully unlock that hope-filled future God has planned for them.
Catholic Schools Week is a beautiful reminder of our shared vocation as educators, families, and young people. Together, we ensure that St Joseph’s Mungindi remains a place where faith is active, learning is purposeful, and every single child is given the tools to thrive.
Happy Catholic Schools Week 2026!
