Assessment at Rollins
At Rollins, assessment is an important part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers use a range of assessment practices to monitor student progress, guide instruction and support every student’s growth and achievement.
Assessment allows teachers to:
- Understand what students know and can do
- Identify areas requiring support or extension
- Plan targeted teaching
- Provide meaningful feedback
- Track growth over time
We use both formative and summative assessment practices throughout the school year.
Some of the assessments we use include:
DIBELS
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is used to assess and monitor students’ early reading development, including fluency and foundational literacy skills.
Phonics Plus Assessment
The Phonics Plus Assessment helps teachers assess students’ understanding of letter-sound relationships and phonics knowledge to support reading and spelling development.
Writing Moderation
Teachers regularly work together to moderate student writing samples. This ensures consistency in teacher judgments and supports high-quality teaching and assessment practices across the school.
Essential Assessment
Essential Assessment is an online assessment tool used in Mathematics to identify student understanding, track progress and support targeted teaching.
Cold Writes
Cold writes provide students with the opportunity to independently apply their writing skills without teacher support. These tasks help teachers assess students’ current writing abilities and measure growth over time.
Daily Reviews
Daily reviews are short revision activities that allow teachers to check student understanding, strengthen retention and identify concepts that may need revisiting.
Teacher Conferences
Teacher conferences provide valuable opportunities for one-on-one conversations between teachers and students. These discussions help teachers assess understanding, provide feedback and support students in setting learning goals.
Checks for Understanding
Throughout lessons, teachers regularly use checks for understanding such as questioning, discussions, exit tickets and observations to monitor learning in real time and adjust teaching as needed.
Supporting Every Learner
At Rollins, assessment is not just about measuring achievement - it is about improving learning outcomes for all students. By using a variety of assessment practices, teachers are able to provide responsive teaching and support every student to grow with confidence and success.
