The Year 12 Vocational Major students have recently begun a rewarding volunteering partnership with Vermont Views Residential Care, spending time each week connecting with residents through shared activities, conversations and creativity.
The program focuses on building meaningful intergenerational relationships while helping students develop communication, teamwork and community engagement skills. In the first week, students and residents enjoyed playing a variety of board games together, creating plenty of laughter and friendly competition.
Last week’s theme, “Now and Then”, encouraged students and residents to share stories and experiences in small groups. Conversations explored topics such as school life, first jobs, favourite music, how people spent their free time growing up, and the biggest world events they remember. Students thoroughly enjoyed hearing the residents’ stories and comparing how life has changed across generations. One resident who is 103 years old shared her experiences during World War 2.
Over the coming weeks, the group will continue to strengthen these connections through a range of collaborative activities. During “Skills Exchange” week, residents and students will teach each other different skills and hobbies, highlighting the value of lifelong learning. “Creating Together” will see mixed groups work collaboratively on projects such as art, collages or cooking activities. The final week, “Celebrate and Connection”, will provide an opportunity to reflect on the friendships formed and celebrate the experience together.
The students have represented the school with kindness, enthusiasm and respect, and the program has already proven to be a valuable experience for everyone involved.
