The Optus Digital Thumbprint program was very good, telling us about the problems people have with scammers and teaching us how we can protect ourselves online. An example of this was when we were told to look for the little lock symbol or for https. We also learned to make pass-phrases instead of simple passwords like “1234” or “password” as our password. We were told a few stories from Dom, who also taught us that it is good to have more than one password, since if one is compromised, all of our accounts won’t go with it.

The Optus Digital Thumbprint workshop was a really interesting incursion which taught us about online safety. We learnt about scams and how to identify them, along with hearing a few stories from Dom, the presenter. Dom taught us about passphrases, which are basically a stronger version of a password and consist of 4 or more words put together. I think this is a really useful technique to use in future, instead of using the same four-digit code for all of my accounts. This session really taught me a lot about how to stay safe and how to not get scammed!
