VCE Ensemble

After a break of five years, VCE Drama returned to MECS this year (Yay!) and on May 19th
the students took to the stage with their ensemble performance, ‘High Seas – Low Tides’.
Since the start of the year, the combined class of Unit 1 and Unit 3 students has been devising an original theatre piece exploring the adventure, danger and luxury of sea travel from the 18th Century to the present. The students went through a process of researching, discussing, improvising, script-writing and rehearsing, before finally presenting their work for assessment.
Ultimately, however, it’s about performing for an audience. Although that last week or two can be stressful and frantic, and the cast sometimes doubt the merit of their own creation, it’s amazing how they all pull it together and there is always a sense of joy and satisfaction when they hear the applause of an appreciative applause.
Highlights of the performance include a moving song about a ‘convict maid’, a hilarious depiction of a pirate captain and his inept crew, a funny, fact-based dialogue about scurvy(!), an eye-opening scene about the injustice of third world disasters being overlooked and a story about a ‘ten pound pom’ that ended with a thought provoking line about our treatment of newcomers.
Thank you to the families and friends who came along, and congratulations to all the performers!
