Mobile Phones at School – Looking Ahead to 2027

From 2027, students at Resurrection School will not be permitted to bring mobile phones to school except in exceptional circumstances that have been approved by the Principal.

We understand that mobile phones have become a regular part of family life, and some parents may have questions about how they can contact their child during the school day. Please be assured that students remain safe and well cared for while at school. If families need to pass on a message or speak with their child, our school office is always available to assist. Likewise, if a student needs to contact a parent or caregiver, staff will ensure this happens promptly.

This change aligns with the direction of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), which has recently announced a renewed focus on student engagement, wellbeing, respectful behaviour, and creating calm learning environments where students can thrive. MACS has highlighted growing concerns about the impact of mobile phones, social media, and excessive screen use on children's learning, relationships, behaviour, and mental health.

Research continues to show that reducing access to phones during the school day can have significant benefits. Children are more likely to engage in face-to-face conversations, participate in active play, develop stronger friendships, and remain focused on learning. Limiting access to mobile devices also reduces distractions and helps protect children from the social pressures and online influences that can sometimes accompany early phone use.

MACS Executive Director Dr Edward Simons recently emphasised the importance of creating school environments where students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. He noted that schools should be places where "more screens go down and more eyes go up," allowing children to fully engage with their teachers, classmates, and learning experiences.

At our school, we believe primary school should be a time when children are free to learn, play, explore, and build meaningful relationships. By creating a phone-free environment, we are supporting students to develop healthy habits, strong social skills, and a sense of belonging within our school community.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our families as we work together to provide a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment where every child can flourish.
