SAKGP Year 5/6

Our first kitchen experience for the term focused on preparing something special for our wonderful mums. In anticipation of the much-loved Mother’s Day Breakfast and Stall, held before school on Friday 8th May, the Year 5/6 students worked carefully, hygienically, and joyfully to create a thoughtful gift.

This year, students prepared handmade pancake mix, accompanied by a hand-filled teabag and a recipe card. Through this experience, students not only developed their practical kitchen skills such as measurement, but also had the opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation for an important women in their lives. This reflects our commitment to living out our faith by showing care, kindness, and service to others.

We also enjoyed some class savoury platters to celebrate our hard work and to feed the workers!

Muffin competition

Our Year 5/6 students prepared some delicious, fluffy savoury muffins during Kitchen Garden this week. Working collaboratively in groups, students created two different flavours: feta, spinach and olive, or feta, spinach and roasted red capsicum, both using a polenta-based muffin mix.

Cooking sessions provide wonderful opportunities for students to try unfamiliar or new foods, such as kalamata olives and roasted red capsicum. It was fantastic to see a few students pleasantly surprised after initially thinking they may not enjoy these ingredients!

Judging the muffins was certainly difficult, as every team produced beautifully presented muffins that tasted amazing.

Out in the garden, students have also begun preparing our garden beds for winter planting. With pencils in hand and using the planting and harvesting planner from the kitchen, students created lists of tools we are needing — including rakes and wheelbarrows for my next shopping trip to Bunnings — as well as suitable plants and seedlings we would like to grow throughout the cooler months.

Jimmy C and James have also been working on a special project, sprouting some of our hand collected seeds from last year, by caring for them on theor classroom windowsill. So far, the seedlings are looking amazing!

Sunshine and buddy lunchtime

Any chance the Year 6 students get to spend time with their Prep buddies is always special, especially when it can be enjoyed in the beautiful Autumn sunshine.

This month, the Year 6 students had an opportunity to share lunch with their buddies out on the senior court, soaking up the last of the warm Autumn weather together. It was lovely to see the conversations, laughter, and care shown between the older and younger students as they enjoyed some relaxed time outdoors.

Why did the cow leave the garden? Because it was 'moooooving'!

Okay, bad joke aside, our resident cow has officially left the garden. Mr Stead and Ms Paglainiti joined us to help detach her from the ground and carefully drag her away.

The students were very interested in the process and, while sad to see her go, are hopeful that she may one day return to the garden again!

Last kitchen garden lesson for Year 5/6

Students had a wonderful time in Week 6 preparing a favourite dish — sushi! Our fillings included carrot, cucumber, and avocado, all sliced finely to perfection by the students themselves as they practised the knife skills and licences they have developed over previous years. We served this alongside some soy sauce and pickled ginger.

Thank you to our amazing Year 5/6 students. Although we did not have many weeks together in the kitchen and garden this term, we certainly made the most of our time. It has been a pleasure sharing these experiences with such enthusiastic and capable students.

Italian – Term Two

Gallery Image

What a fantastic and busy term we have had in Italian so far! Students across all year levels have been enthusiastically learning through songs, games, stories, movement, maths activities, and creative writing tasks while building their confidence in speaking and understanding Italian.

Prep

During Term Two, Prep students explored the units ‘Contiamo’ (Let’s Count), ‘I Colori’ (Colours), and ‘I Giorni Della Settimana’ (Days of the Week). Through stories, chants, music, movement, and dance, students learned to count from 0–10 and practised naming colours and days of the week in Italian. Students loved participating in hands-on games and interactive activities that connected language learning with early numeracy skills.

Year 1/2

Students in Year 1/2 were introduced to the exciting unit ‘Facciamo la matematica!’ (Let’s do maths!) focusing on numeracy learning through languages. Students learned numbers from 1–20 through mathematical equations, number games, songs, and engaging activities. They enthusiastically practised using Italian mathematical vocabulary while building confidence with counting and simple problem solving.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students began the unit ‘I Numeri’ (Numbers), where they explored Italian number vocabulary from 1–50. Students engaged with mathematical language through games, equations, and simple word problems. They practised recognising and using key mathematical terms in both oral and written tasks, using modelled sentence structures to support their learning. Students particularly enjoyed applying their Italian skills through interactive maths challenges and partner activities.

Year 5/6

During Term Two, Year 5/6 students engaged with the unit ‘Salve’ (Greetings/Feelings). This unit enabled students to interact using both spoken and written Italian to describe themselves and share personal interests. Students explored short written texts containing new vocabulary and varied sentence structures. Using the modelled structure of a personal profile, students independently created their own character profiles in Italian, describing a character’s name, age, appearance, interests, and where they live. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence and creativity with their Italian writing.

Bravissimi to all students for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the term!

Sport:

On Friday 22 May, our Year 5 & 6 students had their Winter Gala Day. They participated against schools from our District in either Soccer or Netball. Soccer took place at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville, whilst Netball was held at Eagle Stadium in Werribee. The students displayed terrific effort and enthusiasm in their respective sports whilst coming up against great competition. Well done to everyone involved in supporting a fantastic day.

The Divisional Cross Country event took place on Wednesday 27 May at the Keilor Athletics Track. The students who competed from our school did an amazing job, on what was a wet and soggy day! It was a fantastic achievement to reach this level of competition. We thank and congratulate everyone involved.

The Kingsville Netball Club made a recent visit to our school to deliver clinics for students. The lessons were great fun, where students participated in engaging drills and gameplay situations. This added to another great experience for students in Physical Education.
