What's Happening in the Middle School

Year 3

What’s Happening in Year 3 in February

Welcome to the beginning of the year in Grade 3! We are so pleased to be starting this journey with such a lovely group of children and are excited about the year ahead. Our goal is to create a nurturing and engaging environment where each child feels supported, valued, and encouraged to do their best. The year has begun on a very positive note, and we are already seeing great enthusiasm, curiosity, and effort from the students as they settle into their routines. It has been a joy to watch them engage with learning, build friendships, and show confidence in the classroom. We look forward to working closely in partnership with you throughout the year to support each child’s learning, growth, and overall development.

Wellbeing

  • This year, we will be using the Grow Your Mind podcast to learn about resilience, respect, responsibility, and relationships. It focuses on making the parts of your brain responsible for decision making and self-regulation relatable by connecting them to different animals. Over the next month, students will explore the role of the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, reticular activating system and amygdala and learn how to be of benefit to others.

Literacy

  • Last week, we began our novel study on Matilda, and we will continue to look and interpret the vocabulary and sentence structures used within the book.
  • We will also be practicing some NAPLAN style questions.
  • We will continue to look at the features of a narrative and how we can use them effectively.
  • We have embarked on a new Literacy Program called Word Origins.
  • We will be learning Anglo-Saxon and Latin root words and their affixes to build understanding of word meaning and etymology.

Year 4

What’s Happening in Year 4 in February

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! We are all looking forward to what is sure to be, a fabulous and exciting academic year.

Over the coming weeks, the Year 4 students will be settling into their respective classrooms. They have already commenced the new routines and procedures as well as developed friendships with their new classmates.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing focus will continue to look at identifying our personal strengths as well as embracing our own differing capabilities. This has also supported building self-esteem and an ability to confidently adapt to change.

Literacy

During Literacy sessions, students will be revising specific comprehension strategies that they can utilise to understand new texts. They will also identify different types of sentences and use the correct punctuation required for each of these.

The Year 4 students will also be reading a class novel. In first term, the book that will be the focus in our literacy program is ‘Uncle X-Box’ by Jared Thomas.

Maths

Maths sessions will be revising our knowledge of place value as well as addition and subtraction. Students will continue to participate in a variety of maths games to develop their understanding, as well as continue the practise of a ‘daily review’.

Knowledge Unit

Our knowledge unit in Term 1 will be a study in Civics and Citizenship. This Year 4 unit places a particular focus on the structure of the Australian government as well as how a democracy functions in the world.

Homework

The Year 4 students will not be assigned weekly homework. Instead, students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders.

This year, we are encouraging students to transport their library and take-home books in a Beaumaris Primary School Reading satchel. If you already have one at home, please send it into school as soon as possible. If not, they are available for purchase from the office ($12). Alternatively, books can be sent home in a clear plastic pouch.
