For French Teachers: partnership with KHPS (Reminder)

This year will be our 4th year of collaboration with Killarney Height Public School, our partner school in Sydney. As most of you already know, KHPS and CPS are organising common events each term, our first major event being La Semaine de la Francophonie in Week 8 this term.

The timeline of our events as well as all our shared ressources can be found on the AAFEBS drive. If you are a new French Teacher and don't have access to this drive yet, send me an email so that we can add you ASAP.

Any question, come and see me or Marilyne.

Bilingual Curriculum Framework

The Bilingual Schools' Network have engaged Andrew Scrimgeour, Adelaide University, to develop a framework for the acquisition of a target language.

We are very excited that this is finally becoming a reality as the DET develop curriculum documents for every other learning area ... but not language learning in a bilingual context.

By working closely with Andrew, we hope to ensure that this work actually does achieve a viable curriculum document for meets our needs!

Andrew will be visiting our school on Tuesday February 10th from 9 to 12am.

In session 1 we will go around the school and visit some classes. If you would like to show your practices please send me an email so I can prioritise visiting your class.

In session 2, we will meet and discuss our challenges and needs with the French subschool leaders.

At 11 am, Andrew and Janet will meet and discuss the specificities of our bilingual learning environment.

If there is anything you would like us to share with Andrew please send me an email and I will make sure to discuss it with him.

It's time to talk about toilets

As many of us are aware, the toilets have previously been an area where unexpected behaviours have occurred quite frequently, with toilets on both campuses needing to be closed and cleaned frequently last year.

Whilst working with your students to build their understanding of your classroom expectations, please also take the opportunity to set the bar of expected behaviours when using the bathroom facilities.

Feel free to make use of these social stories made with the help of Eglantine last year if they can help with explicitly teaching these expectations to your students. The same process applies as for the explicit teaching of other expected behaviours - Tell, Show (as we do not enter student bathrooms this can be done with resources like the social stories), Practice (pre-correct and praise after students have demonstrated the behaviours).

These were created for the JC but could be adapted for the SC:

Year Level/House Sports

To begin incorporating our Houses meaningfully into our school culture, our weekly year level Sport sessions are to be organised in House groups. In this way, our students will get to know which House they belong to and work together with different students from other classes.

Please be mindful of students of note who have been separated if they are now in the   same House.

Student Leadership - Staff Support needed!

Now that we have settled in to 2026 it is time to set up our Student Leadership opportunities for the year.  As in the past few years, we will have the following roles available for students across the year levels:

  • Student Voice Representatives - one per class, per semester.  Students participate in 2x meetings per term and other events as they come up
  • Transition Ambassadors - Term 4 only, Years 1-6, more information to come in Term 4.
  • Peer Mediators - Year 5 only, support younger students in the yard with minor conflicts/ issues that arise.
  • Student Committees - Year 6 only as part of the Year 6 curriculum program, involving all students.

This year I would love to have some assistance from staff with coordinating and running these student leadership programs.  We have had a few committed staff in the past who have assisted with a role here and there, and this has made a huge difference in the experience of the students.

If you are keen to support one of these groups and happy to do so on a voluntary basis (i.e. I can't manage this in lieu of a yard duty) I'd love to hear from you.  Thanks!
