Message from the Chaplain

In the gospels there is a story of Jesus calming a violent storm while with his friends in a small fishing boat. They were overcome by fear and distressed about their situation. Whether or not we approach this story from a faith perspective, its imagery is instantly relatable. Life has a way of whipping up storms of its own - uncertainty at work, family pressures, financial strain, or the quiet anxieties we carry but rarely name. The disciples’ fear is very human, and so is their longing for someone to steady the chaos.

What stands out in the story is not just the miracle, but the posture of calm in the middle of turmoil. Jesus is depicted as centred, grounded, and unshaken, even when everything around him is in chaos. That image offers a helpful lens for today. We may not be able to silence every storm, but we can cultivate the kind of inner steadiness that keeps us from being overwhelmed by them.

For many, that steadiness comes from faith, knowing that Jesus is with them through the turmoil and uncertainty. For others, it comes from community, purpose, or practices that anchor the mind and heart. The story invites all of us, regardless of our beliefs, to consider where we find our centre, and how we might bring calm, courage, and compassion into the storms of life.
