Year 2 News

Dear Parents and Carers,
What’s been happening in Grade 2 recently?
As inquirers and learners, we have been intentionally embedding our Agreed Ways into our daily classroom life. Together as a year level, we have unpacked what these expectations look like, sound like and feel like in action, and also discussed what it looks like when they are not being followed. Through rich discussions, role plays and shared reflections, we have been thinking carefully about our own behaviours, celebrating the moments when we demonstrate our Agreed Ways and identifying areas where we can continue to grow. This ongoing reflection is helping us build a strong, respectful and supportive learning community where everyone feels safe, valued and ready to learn.
As faith-filled people, we have been deepening our understanding of the purpose of prayer and the important role it plays in our classroom community. We have explored a range of sacred symbols, learning what each symbol represents and why it is meaningful in our Catholic tradition. Through our learning, we are developing the ability to recognise these symbols in our classroom and at church.
We have been thoughtfully creating our own prayer mats. These prayer mats will be used throughout the year as we gather together in prayer, helping us to reflect, connect with God and grow as a prayerful classroom community.
As mathematicians, we have been strengthening our understanding of place value and how numbers are made up of hundreds, tens and ones. Through hands-on learning experiences, we explored how each digit has a value depending on its place in a number. One of our favourite activities was building our names using MAB blocks! We carefully counted and calculated how many hundreds, tens and ones were needed, then recorded and represented our totals. This helped us to clearly see how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. We have also started developing our skills in regrouping and renaming, learning how to rename tens for ones and hundreds for tens. These important strategies are helping us become more confident and flexible thinkers, and we will continue to build on these skills as we deepen our mathematical understanding.
This week, we will be learning about:
- Numeracy: Place Value
- Reading: Reading stamina and comprehension strategies - summarising and visualising
- Spelling: The digraph /ow/ making the sound “0” as in snow.
- Writing: Writing stamina and sentence formation
- Inquiry: Growth Mindset
- Religion: Ash Wednesday
Have a great week!
