Year 1 News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Another exciting week of learning has taken place in the Year 1 learning spaces as we continued to settle into classroom routines and expectations with growing confidence.

As writers, we have been exploring the parts of a sentence using Colourful Semantics cues (WHO, WHEN, WHAT DOING, WHAT and WHERE). Together, as thinkers, we brainstormed a range of words that fit each part and practised combining them to construct clear and complete sentences. We also explored how adding more detail makes our writing more interesting for the reader. It has been wonderful to see everyone becoming more confident in sharing their ideas, contributing to class discussions and building sentences collaboratively.

As mathematicians, we collected data by asking questions and recording responses using tally marks. We worked carefully to ensure our tally marks were accurate, remembering to group our tally marks by 5. We then observed and interpreted the data before representing it in picture graphs. We discussed what the data shows, which category had the most and least responses, and how we know. This supported us in making sense of information, developing our thinking skills and using mathematical language to explain our reasoning.

As religious thinkers, we unpacked and discussed the St Fidelis School Prayer, focusing on what the prayer means and what we are praying for as a school community each morning. As thinkers, we reflected on key words, sharing thoughtful ideas about kindness, learning, gratitude and helping others. These discussions supported us to develop a deeper understanding of prayer and it’s purpose in our daily life at school.

As collaborators, we worked together to create a class prayer, sharing what we would like to pray for each day in our learning space. We listened respectfully to each other's ideas and worked cooperatively to combine our thoughts into a shared prayer. This prayer is proudly displayed in our Year 1 prayer area, and we have taken great pride in contributing to something so meaningful. Please feel free to take a look when you’re next in the Junior Learning Area.
