Week two is nearly done and dusted, and it has been wonderful welcoming students back to school.
As we begin the year, our staff are continuing to focus on creating learning environments where every young person feels safe, valued and supported. One of the key approaches guiding this work is Unconditional Positive Regard.
Unconditional Positive Regard, a concept developed by psychologist Carl Rogers, means valuing each student for who they are, while still maintaining clear expectations for behaviour and learning. It is about separating the student from the behaviour and consistently communicating: you matter, you are valued, and you belong here.
This approach plays an important role in student wellbeing and learning. When students feel accepted and respected, they are more willing to engage, take risks in their learning, and develop confidence and resilience. It also supports positive behaviour by helping students reflect, repair mistakes and re-engage with learning.
In practice, this looks like staff greeting students by name, responding calmly to challenges, using respectful language, and providing opportunities for students to reset and try again.
By focusing on strong, positive relationships, we aim to create classrooms where students feel supported to learn, grow and thrive. We look forward to working in partnership with families to make 2026 a positive and successful year for all students.
