Prep/1A - Ms Nealy & Prep/1B - Miss Takavada

What a wonderful start we have had to the school year! Our Foundation students are settling beautifully into school life after beginning on February 3rd, and our Grade 1 students have done an amazing job helping model routines and expectations since returning back this year.

This week, we are continuing to build classroom routines, friendships, and confidence as learners.

What We Have Been Learning

Reading 📖

We have begun practising Heggerty phonemic awareness each day to strengthen our phonics skills. Students have been introduced to the first four letters and sounds: m, s, f, a. We are practising:

  • Saying the sounds
  • Blending sounds together
  • Writing the letters

We have also been reading Starting School and learning how to make predictions and using the illustrations to help us understand the story.

Writing ✏️

We introduced the concept of nouns and learned that nouns are the names of:

  • People
  • Places
  • Animals
  • Things

Students contributed their own drawings and ideas, which we proudly added to our class anchor chart on our Writing Wall.

Maths 🔢

We have been learning about 2D shapes and can now recognise and name:

  • Square
  • Circle
  • Rectangle
  • Triangle

Students explored these shapes through hands on experiences and drawing different objects that appear in different shapes.

Inquiry 🌏

We began creating our “Our Class is a Family” book. Students shared what makes a family special and how we can care for one another in our classroom community

Social & Emotional Learning(SEL)💛

We have been learning about:

  • Being a kind and respectful class member
  • Understanding our classroom routines
  • Building new friendships
  • Learning how to work and play together safely

Wellbeing & Routines

  • Learning how to be a safe, respectful learner
  • Practising morning routines and transitions
  • Building independence and resilience

This consistent routine supports students to develop self-regulation, resilience, and positive relationships.

🍎 Brain Food Reminder (10:00am)

Please pack a separate piece of brain food (fruit or veggie snack) that students can easily access during our 10:00am learning block. This helps students refuel and stay focused.

Great options: apple slices, berries, banana, cucumber, carrots, grapes.

🧢 Hats & Belongings

  • Students must wear a blue school hat during Term 1 for outdoor play.
  • Please ensure all hats, jumpers, drink bottles and lunch boxes are clearly labelled.

⏰ School Times

  • School begins at 8:30am
  • School finishes at 3:00pm
  • Pick up is from the Prep area at the front of the school
  • If your child has an older sibling in Grade 3+, please inform me if they will be collecting your child.

To support independence, we kindly ask families to say goodbye at the gate in the mornings.

💬 How Families Can Help at Home

  • Practise packing and unpacking school bags independently
  • Encourage your child to talk about their day
  • Read together each night
  • Practise counting objects at home (toys, fruit, steps)
  • Homework will be sent home each Monday and is to be returned by Friday, weekly.
