Year 10, 11 & 12

Assistant Principal's Report

It is always pleasing to see a successful and productive start for students in term 1, including their participation in extra-curricular opportunities available during break time and after school.

Daily school attendance is important for all students to succeed in education and to ensure they don't fall behind both socially and developmentally. Students who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health and employment outcomes, across their lives. It is important that student’s develop habits of regular attendance at school.

It’s not okay for students to be away or late to school and it’s important that students are only absent if they are genuinely ill.

Below are some easy-to-follow tips to improve attendance at school:

✔ Commit to sending your children to school every day.

✔ Make sure children arrive at school and class on time (you can check this on Compass).

✔ Inform the school when they are away, sending evidence of genuine absence.

✔ Students must catch up on missed class work.

Students must maintain 100% attendance in all subjects, unless ill.  If senior students are absent on the day of a Scored Assessed Coursework (SAC), then they must provide a doctor’s certificate to be able to re-sit the SAC for a scored assessment.

Parent/Teacher interviews

I would like to encourage all parents/carers to attend the parent/teacher interviews on Tuesday 26 March, from 11.10am – 7pm.  The interviews will provide vital feedback on the progress of your child along with discussions of encouragement and support for improvement.

Mobile phone policy enforcement

In accordance with the Department of Education’s Mobile Phone Policy issued by the Minister for Education, personal mobile phones must not be used at Wyndham Central College during school hours (8:50-am – 3pm), including Break 1 and 2, unless an exemption has been granted by the Principal.

The aim of this policy is to provide:

  • a safe environment to learn without inappropriate mobile phone use (including cyberbullying) or distractions.
  • greater opportunities for social interaction and physical activity during recess and lunchtimes.

I ask that all parents/carers please support this policy for the benefit of all.

Preparing for term 2

All students return after the holidays, on Monday 15 April and are expected to be in our College winter uniform. Please ensure that your child has this in place before the commencement of term 2, along with all the necessary equipment, ready to learn.  Further to this, I would like to ask that you please assist the College by ensuring that your child wears the correct school uniform every day. It is the policy of the College that all students wear our school uniform with pride.  This is in keeping with our aim of developing in students a feeling of belonging, respect and a sense of identity.  Students must wear the uniform on each school day, to and from school and the uniform must be always presentable.  The positive image that the College presents to the community is important to us.

In the best interest of students’ academic progress, please note that it is not possible to make subject changes this far into the year. We have an informative course selection process that we involve students and parents/carers with which also involves signing off on the subjects offered.

I encourage you to please contact your child’s Tutor Teacher if you need assistance or have any concerns so that they can be dealt with in a timely fashion.

I would like to wish all students and their families a relaxing term break, along with a happy and safe Easter and we look forward to seeing all students back in term 2.

Year Level Leader's Report - Year 10

Since our last update our Class of 2026 has started a new suite of units covering topics from probability to text analysis. The team has been working hard to support them as they move into a busy Term 2.

To help our students start their text analysis unit in English we invited a guest lecturer to our assembly from the Humanities faculty to talk about the context of their novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Thank you to Mr Damjanovski for sharing his historical expertise with the group.

Our Year 10 elective subjects have been doing some excellent experiments to give students some practical experience in their fields – our Psychology class did experiments on taste and senses, while our Crime Scene Investigators completed a facial reconstruction using clay.

We have been instilling some pride in our school by regularly cleaning classrooms and the outside deck as a group. Thank you to all our students for having a go and working together to keep our space clean.

As the weather gets colder, we ask parents and carers to make sure their students have the correct winter uniform, hoodies and non-school jumpers aren’t a part of the uniform. If you need assistance with getting winter uniform please speak to Student Services.

Last week, we also had a presentation from Victoria Police on cyber safety and some reminders around legal obligations as our cohort reaches a new age of legal responsibility. Thank you to our local police members for giving up their time to speak to the group and meet with them in their classrooms.

Next term our focus for the cohort is who do I want to be? We will be working through our career planning in tutor time, have information sessions for students and parents on VCE options for 2025, and open up expressions of interest for work experience. Please make sure your details are up to date with the school and that you speak to your students about what paperwork and information they need to go through for this important transition work.

If you have any questions about our focus next term and careers please speak to your child’s tutor teacher.

Students have had many extracurricular opportunities, such as partaking in cheerleading, soccer, volleyball, meditation, and other activities during break time, clubs and the various other activities that were run during Term 1.  Students have had the opportunity to participate in these clubs throughout the term free of charge to assist in building interest in physical activity and social and emotional learning through sport. Ms Sandlant, one of the College's Assistant Principals, runs these sporting clubs each term, and we encourage students to sign up and partake in them as the benefits of learning academically, socially and emotionally are evident for those involved.

I want to bring the following matters into your attention and seek your support:

Behaviour:

  • Students who bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored in their lockers during school hours (8.50 am - 3.00 pm). Parents/carers can reach their child in emergencies by calling the school’s administration office. Exemptions may be applied if certain conditions are met.
  • All students should wear full school uniform at school. Please ensure students leave home with full uniform and seek support from the tutor teachers if you have difficulty arranging the uniforms.
  • All students have been allocated a locker and a lock. They need to keep their bags in the lockers and not take them to class.
  • Students will be issued after-school detentions if they are found to have breached the above school rules. Continual breach will face a suspension.

Academic:

  • To progress to Year 12, students need to pass a minimum of 9 Units from a maximum of 12 (Year 11—Units 1 & 2) and must pass Units 1 & 2 English.
  • Students should attend school every day unless they are sick. Please plan your holidays during the term break to ensure students' learning is not impacted.
  • Students must supply a medical certificate if absent for a SAC to receive a grade for the SAC.
  • As VCE students, students are expected to study for an average of 3 hours per night to successfully complete their first year of VCE. Students can reduce this time if they use their class time efficiently.
  • Please speak to your child, the subject teacher and tutors if your child has received a Notice of Concerns and Failed Results or a Report for an N grade to put strategies in place to support your child in receiving an S grade in the subject.

Wellbeing:

  • We have an amazing team of tutors and staff at student services to assist students if they have well-being concerns or feel worried about the workload or other matters. Please inform the tutor teacher, Student Services, or me if you have any concerns so we can put strategies in place to support your child.

On behalf of the Year 11 team, have a happy and relaxing school holiday!
