Seed of the Week - Radish

Radish is a cool climate crop, typically grown in autumn and early winter in our part of the world. Radish grow very fast; they only take 6-8 weeks to harvest.

Radish grows ideally in well-drained soil and is not limited to full sun but to partial shade too. Radish can be eaten raw or sliced into salads or sandwiches. Its peppery taste can be used to flavour slaws, dips and as a garnish.

Who has a rabbit?

If you have a rabbit and you are cleaning up their deposits and disposing of them, Garden Club would like to add rabbit deposits into their worm farm to enrich their casting. Please contact me Mr Choong before donating. I thank you in advance.

Rabbit deposit can be used because their diet comprises of mainly plant material, which is compatible with the worm farm, since they can eat the same thing. It is not uncommon to find similar microbes between the two animals. Rabbits leave their deposits in their immediate living space so they can consume their deposit later. This process allows more nutrients to be absorbed by the rabbit. Their unique uniform shape helps them to identify their own deposits.

Plant of the week for Term 3

In term three I will be introducing very low maintenance plants as giveaways for, “Plant of the Week”. They require minimal care and are great for entry level plant keeping.

Week 2 Snake plant

Week 4 Duck Weed

Week 6 Spanish Moss

Week 8 Bladder Wort

Week 10 Japanese Sweet Potato

Volunteers

If for whatever reason you’re not able to attend Garden Club but would like to help, we are looking for volunteers to collect sticks, Lady Birds, more compost for the worm farms and discarded packaging to make useful things for Garden Club.

We know there are children who would like to join,  however arrival times to school are just right before the start of lessons. Please feel free to chat to me Mr Choong on the playground.

When is Garden Club for Term 2?

Currently Garden Club happens on Tuesday and Thursday morning, after the gates are open. We meet at the bubblers on the Churchill Avenue side of the school.

There is also Garden Club for Stage 3 on Friday, who are completing Pope Francis Award. This is a priority for Stage 3; however, anyone is welcome to join if there are extra jobs.
