Year 1 Spotlight

In Year 1, we have been learning all about where food comes from and the changes it goes through before it reaches us. We kicked off our Farm to Fork inquiry topic with an excursion to Myuna Farm, where we experienced farm processes firsthand! We saw and engaged with different animals, explored an abundant vegetable garden, planted our own seeds and discovered where milk comes from by milking a goat!

In the classroom, we built on what we learned at Myuna Farm by exploring the changes food goes through before it arrives at our tables. We investigated the journey of milk – from the farm to us – and explored how wheat is processed into bread. To show our understanding, we created flow charts to represent these processes. We also began learning about the difference between whole foods (such as fresh fruit and vegetables) and processed foods.

In writing, we used our new knowledge about healthy eating and the five food groups to write information reports about different foods. This included what healthy food was in our lunch boxes and how a sometimes food like cocoa beans become chocolate! We collected data about the food we brought to school using tally marks and represented it in graphs.

We have been having fun in maths, exploring different learning areas. We strengthened our understanding of whole dollar values by using different combinations of coins and notes to represent $5, $10 and $20. We also developed our understanding of addition and subtraction through drawings, manipulatives, and written number sentences. Working collaboratively with our peers and using hands-on materials helped us gain confidence in our skills while enjoying the learning process. We shared our enthusiasm for maths at our recent open afternoon, where visitors joined us for a competitive game of Get Out of My House and the Place Value Number Game – a fun way to showcase our knowledge of addition, subtraction and place value.

We’ve loved the curiosity and enthusiasm Year 1 students have brought to their learning this semester. We’re looking forward to more great learning opportunities in the terms ahead.
