Assistant Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we are already approaching the end of Term 2! As we reflect on these past weeks, we are proud of how our students have embraced new challenges and continued to grow in their learning. Across all year levels, friendships and social connections have flourished, contributing to a positive school community.
This term, students successfully participated in a wide range of sports, musical and extra-curricular activities, providing them with the opportunity to explore their interests and shine. It has been amazing to come together as a community each week at assembly to showcase student learning and talents. These presentations from the students allow them to share their learning experiences in their own words, building their confidence and public speaking skills.
Work Experience
As part of the Victorian Curriculum, secondary school students are encouraged to undertake a career-based work placement. We are fortunate to have four students join us next week undertaking work experience at Burwood East Primary School, two of whom are past students. We will have three Year 10 students and one Year 12 student joining our school to assist in the classrooms and around the school. We hope they enjoy their time at BEPS and gain insight to the teaching vocation.
The Stand Up Project (SUP)
Last week our Year 5 students and our Year 6 SUP leaders attended an incursion with Dr Zach Gregory to reflect and review the core principles of the Stand Up Project at Burwood East PS, with the aim to reduce discrimination, harassment and bullying through student-designed and delivered Upstander Training.
To continue the amazing work of our Year 6 SUP leaders in promoting the 4Ds: Distract, Direct, Delegate and Delay, and the shared language and understanding of Friendship Fires, Mean on Purpose and Bullying, 21 Year 5 students have been selected as our new SUP leaders. They will work with Ken, Katie and our Year 6 SUP leaders in developing resources and supporting an inclusive and positive school community. It was fantastic to recognise these leaders during the badge presentation at this week’s assembly.
Next Wednesday, 2nd of July, from 4:00-5:00pm Dr. Zach Greig will be here at school presenting a session for parents about the Stand Up Project at BEPS and how to support your child as they navigate situations with peers. This session will be held in the STEM space. Our new Year 5 SUP leaders will be co-facilitating the session so please come along to learn more about the Stand Up Project and how it can support our community, as well as to see student voice and leadership in action at BEPS! The session will be focussed on parents, but you are able to bring your child along if needed.
Student Illness
As winter rolls around, children are prone to catching colds and flus. We ask that you please keep your child home until they are feeling better. This reduces the spread of illnesses. Additionally, as your child is healing from their cold or flu, allow them time to rest and recover, ensuring they are healthy and feeling energised to return to their learning.
PLA Assembly
Next Friday is the last day of Term 2. We will be hosting our Principal Learning Awards Assembly in the COLA from 1:50pm. To have some fun on the final day of the term, students are invited to wear free dress to school. Students who dress in casual clothes are asked to bring a gold coin donation to go towards Food Bank.
A friendly reminder that school concludes on Friday 4th of July at 2:30pm.
Happy Holidays
Wishing all our families a safe and happy mid-year break. We look forward to seeing the students return on Monday 21st of July.
Take care,
Teri and Edwina
