Exploring Futures at the Hunter Disability Expo
Students from Years 9 to 12 recently had the valuable opportunity to attend the Hunter Disability Expo, an event designed to connect people with a wide range of services, supports, and future pathways.
Held at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, the expo featured more than 100 exhibitors from across the disability sector, including providers of employment services, education and training opportunities, assistive technology, NDIS supports, and community programs.
Our students engaged enthusiastically with stallholders, asking thoughtful questions and gathering information about post-school options. It was a fantastic chance for them to explore what’s possible and begin thinking about the steps they can take towards greater independence and meaningful participation in the community.
The day was also a great way for students to build their confidence in navigating large public events, practicing communication skills, and making informed choices about their futures.
Overall, the Hunter Disability Expo was such an inclusive and informative experience for our students. It not only broadened their understanding of the supports and opportunities available but also encouraged them to start thinking positively about their future pathways. We look forward to attending again next year!
Shining Bright at Star Struck 2025: Remixed Volume 33
We are incredibly proud to share the achievements of four of our amazing Kuta-kaya students who recently took to the stage as part of this year’s Star Struck production.
Star Struck is a showcase of talent from across the Hunter and Central Coast, bringing together students from all backgrounds to perform in an unforgettable display of music, dance and drama. This year’s show was no exception, and our students truly shone!
With dedication, energy, and a great deal of commitment -including long days, late nights, and countless rehearsals- our students worked tirelessly alongside their peers to refine their routines. Their infectious enthusiasm and growing confidence lit up the stage, bringing joy to the audience and filling our school community with pride.
Taking part in Star Struck gave our students a valuable opportunity to build their performance skills while also developing teamwork, resilience, and self-expression through collaboration with students from other schools. From their first step on stage to the final round of applause, they approached the entire experience with enthusiasm, confidence, and a sense of pride.
We’d like to acknowledge the commitment of the staff and families who supported them throughout the process. Your encouragement and belief in their abilities made this opportunity possible.
Congratulations to our performers- Abbie, Shauna, Addison and Ophelia! You truly were stars on and off the stage!
Kuta-kaya Year 7 Students Brave the Elements at Camp
In week one of this term, five brave Year 7 students from Kuta-kaya, accompanied by two dedicated staff members, set off on a 3-day adventure camp filled with challenges, muddy boots, and unforgettable memories.
Despite the wet weather, cold mornings, and slippery tracks, our students showed incredible resilience, persistence, and perseverance. For some, it was their first time away from home - an exciting and sometimes daunting step that they tackled with courage and maturity.
Throughout the camp, students embraced new experiences, from outdoor activities to team-building challenges, all while pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones. Along the way, they made new friendships, laughed through the mud, and supported each other through every challenge.
It was a fantastic opportunity for growth, connection, and adventure. We’re proud of each of them for giving it their all, rain or shine!
The big swing was so cool! I was nervous at first, but once I did it, I wanted to go again. It felt like flying! - Jackson
Disability Recognition Week 2025
This term, Kuta-kaya, proudly promoted Disability Recognition Week, a celebration of inclusion, awareness, and the diverse abilities within our school community.
Throughout the week, students engaged in a range of simulation stations and activities designed to promote understanding and appreciation of people living with disability. These included interactive activities, creative projects, and collaborative games that encouraged empathy and respect.
The week was a powerful reminder of the importance of creating a school culture where everyone feels valued, supported, and able to participate fully.
Well done to all involved for making Disability Recognition Week a meaningful and positive experience for our whole school community!
Huntlee Park Excursion
It was a memorable day that left students buzzing with excitement and asking, “When can we go again? "
Kuta-kaya students recently enjoyed an exciting day out at Huntlee Park, filled with fresh air, laughter, and hands-on fun. The highlight of the day was the two-way flying fox, which had students racing through the air with big smiles and loud cheers. The giant climbing and sliding play equipmentproved to be another favourite, with students challenging themselves to reach new heights before zipping down the slides.
The large sandpit offered the perfect spot for creative play and social interaction, with students building, digging, and working together throughout the day. The excursion gave everyone a chance to connect with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and experience learning and growth outside the classroom.
It was a memorable day that left students buzzing with excitement and asking, “When can we go again?”
Mother’s Day Stall
In the lead-up to Mother’s Day, the students of Kuta-kaya took the lead in organising and running a special stall to celebrate the incredible women in our lives. From setting up colourful displays to helping classmates choose thoughtful gifts, the students showed responsibility, teamwork, and care throughout the event.
The stall was a huge success, with a variety of affordable gifts on offer—from candles, potted plants and handmade items. The students worked hard managing money, assisting younger students, and ensuring the stall ran smoothly.
All proceeds from the Mother’s Day Stall went directly back into supporting the Kuta-kaya faculty, with funds helping to provide resources and opportunities for future learning. It was a heartwarming day filled with smiles, gratitude, and a strong sense of community spirit.
Work Crew
The Work Crew students started their term with a productive and hands-on task — cleaning and organising the Kuta-kaya backyard gardening shed. What was once a cluttered and chaotic space has now been transformed into a neat, functional area ready for future use.
Students rolled up their sleeves and got to work, clearing out old items, sweeping floors, sorting tools, and creating a more efficient layout. Their efforts have made the shed safer, tidier, and far more user-friendly for upcoming gardening and outdoor learning activities.
This task marks the beginning of a long list of jobs the Work Crew will tackle this term, and they’ve certainly set the bar high. Staff and students alike are already seeing the benefits of their hard work, with the shed now ready to support Kuta-kaya’s backyard projects.
Boccia Comp
Kuta-kaya students showed skill, sportsmanship, and school pride during a recent sporting event, finishing the day with 3 wins, 1 draw, and just 1 loss. It was a fantastic effort from all involved, with students giving their best in every game and showing great teamwork and determination.
Throughout the day, the Kuta-kaya team proudly represented Kurri Kurri High School, displaying respectful behaviour, strong communication, and a positive attitude on and off the field.
A great day was had by all, and the students should be commended for their performance and the way they upheld the values of our school community. Well done, team!
