STAGE 5

GEOGRAPHY

Biomes and Food Security

Both Year 9 and Year 10 explored the topic of Biomes and Food Security. Year 9 students focused on the sustainability of production within different biomes. They created a rating system to evaluate the environmental impacts of producing everyday items like coffee, beef and cotton, drawing links between consumer choices and ecological footprints. While Year 10 applied their learning by creating broadsheets that summarised human impacts on specific biomes. These broadsheets supported students in answering short-answer questions on threats and management strategies within those environments, strengthening their skills in integrating case studies and writing structured extended responses.

ENGLISH

Assessment Task Reminders

A reminder to all Year 9 and 10 students that assessment tasks must be submitted on time. If a student is absent, they are required to submit a misadventure form within two days of returning to school for the task to be considered. Submissions must be handed in during class to your English teacher or directly to the English staffroom. We are proud of the dedication and growth we’ve seen in our students so far this year—let’s keep that momentum going by staying organised and responsible during assessment time.

VISUAL ARTS

Year 9 have been working on their Figure in a Landscape painting task. They’ve creatively reimagined well-known artworks and popular culture images by blending them into new compositions. This has allowed them to explore composition, colour mixing, and storytelling while putting their own spin on iconic imagery.

Year 10 students have been studying the human face, creating expressive drawings and paintings inspired by a range of artistic styles including Pop Art. They’ve experimented with both traditional and contemporary materials to bring their portraits to life.

DANCE

A BIG Term for Year 9

Year 9 Dance students have had a fun and productive Term 2, wrapping up their Dance Through Time unit by creating entertaining and informative videos that showed how dance has evolved across different eras. They’ve now moved on to Dance Around the World, where they are exploring a variety of cultural and folk dances, learning about the traditions, stories, and meanings behind these global styles.

A highlight of the term was an excursion to Sydney to see Bangarra Dance Theatre’s powerful performance of Illume. Students have begun analysing the work back in class and are doing a fantastic job developing their dance analysis skills, engaging deeply with the themes, choreography, and cultural significance of the performance.

SCIENCE

Year 9 Earths Resources

This term in Year 9 Science, students are learning all about Earth’s resources and how they are used by humans in everyday life. Part of this topic includes learning about the properties of polymers and plastics.

Our Year 9 students got creative and attempted to create ‘bioplastics’ - a more environmentally friendly version of plastic. Students also attempted to make plastic from milk (Casein plastic).

Year 9 have also investigated the strength of different plastics using a tensile strength test. They determined which type of plastic bag was the strongest.
