Scienceworks excursion

As part of our Term 2 Inquiry and English Units, exploring the big question “What changes occur in the sky and on the land?”, our Year 2 students visited Scienceworks for an exciting and fun day out!

One of the highlights was watching the Lightning Show, where we learned all about electricity.

Ruby said, “I thought it was really fun, and it was so cool when we made our own weather at the lightning show!”

We discovered that there are two types of electricity: static electricity, like lightning, which happens from a build-up of charge, and current electricity, which flows through circuits and powers everyday devices.

We explored how electricity travels through different materials and learned how conductors, like metals and even humans, let electricity flow easily, while insulators, such as plastic, wood, and air, do not.

The show finished with an impressive lightning strike display where we learned about lightning safety and which places are safe or unsafe during a storm. The real lightning, Ruby added, “was a little bit scary …”

After the show, students had some free time to explore the museum exhibits, discovering even more about science in a fun, hands-on way.

Zac said he “liked the games we got to play in the museum, especially the magic elevator and making our own race cars!”
