Sustainability success

– Sarah Tyo, Sustainability Leader

Port Melbourne Primary School is proud to celebrate two exciting milestones in our ongoing sustainability journey — being awarded a 2025 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant, and achieving our third star in the ResourceSmart Schools program.

Three Stars and counting

We’re thrilled to share that our school has officially become a 3-Star ResourceSmart School through Sustainability Victoria!

This exciting milestone recognises our commitment to making our school more sustainable and environmentally aware. Most recently, we successfully completed the Water Module, highlighting our efforts to reduce water usage, raise awareness about water conservation, and care for this precious resource.

A huge thank you to our students, staff, and families for supporting our journey toward a more sustainable future—every action counts! Special shout out to Mr Angus, Kaye Lindsell, Anthony Moran and Callie MacIntosh for your incredible work leading us in discovering and sourcing improvements to conserving water usage on our school grounds. Another great success of our community working together for the greater good!

We have begun working through the Waste Module and look forward to finding more solutions to minimise waste sent to landfill and to save on waste related bills. Watch this space next term for updates! If you have ideas or something you’d like to share, feel free to email me at sarah.tyo@education.vic.gov.au and reach out!

Plastic Free July - Nude Food Day

When: Thursday 3 July

Plastic Free July is a global movement to encourage people to reduce their use of single-use plastics. Single use plastic is plastic that is used once, then thrown away. Like chip packets and muesli bar wrappers. Convenience comes at a cost to our environment as soft plastic can take at least 80 years to decompose, and can have a harmful impact on marine and land wildlife!

Junior Waste Warriors will be running a whole school competition for Plastic Free July….

Thursday 3rd July is NUDE FOOD DAY!

We encourage students to have NO single use plastic in their lunchbox. Members of the Junior Waste Warriors will visit classes at recess eating time to count the number of students with a 'Nude Food' lunchbox. Winning class will have a fruit smoothie party at lunch eating time, Friday 4th July!

Pollinator Playground funding

We’re thrilled to announce that Port Melbourne Primary School has been awarded a 2025 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant of over $4,000 to support our upcoming ‘Pollinator Playground’ project!

Funded by the Victorian Government through the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and supported by Landcare Australia, this grant encourages young people to value and care for Victoria’s natural environment. Our project will focus on creating spaces that support native pollinators and help students connect with nature through hands-on, sustainable learning. Planning is well underway for mulching, fencing and planting around the oval to create gardens more attractive to pollinators and for our students to learn from.

We can’t wait to get started and will keep you updated as our ‘Pollinator Playground’ comes to life!
