Celebrating young poets

Our Year 6 students have been studying poetry this term. They've had the opportunity to unpack the author’s craft to reveal the hidden messages from within. The use of metaphors and similes have been widely implemented to connect nature with human impact.

An intense class discussion on “A World without ….” soon followed and the enthusiasm continued into many requests for time to work on free verse.

We hope you enjoy reading a sample of their work.

Stray

– By Amira

Stray cat on my windowsill,

How did your life go downhill?

Like me, you were taken away.

Your happiness beginning to sway.

Now you have been shunned and disrespected,

their actions and words rushing to your head.

You promised a safe utopia,

but now you’re in a dystopia.

Walking through dark alleyways,

your life beginning to look like a maze.

You’ve been treated with abuse,

in this city, cruelty is the muse.

The days feel prolonged hell,

your wounds beginning to swell.

The world is a dangerous place,

yet we still stare them in the face.

We wanted fantasy.

They gave us fallacy.

They disdain us.

They hate us.

They live to tease us.

Here, we became the martyr.

Our lives, a shade of white and black.

The blood in our mouth has never tasted richer.

We are weapons, we are smarter.

Our blood stained lips are beginning to crack.

STAY WITH US.

I want to go back…

The End is Near

 – By Ava C

Climate change is taking us all,

The country leaders just want to brawl.

While Donald Trump tweets on his phone,

People in California are losing their homes.

The oceans around the world are rising,

While people keep taking photos and smiling.

Everyone looking for one or more saviours,

The world leaders we’ve chosen are nothing but failures.

The animals in the world are slowly dying,

It seems to me like no one is trying.

A World without Laughter

 – By Morgan

Dark and dull, nothing but sad,

This world of mine, making me mad

No more giggle, not even a cheer,

All have gone is something I fear

Silence stands by me, not a hint of a smile

This dark, dark day will go on for a while

No colours for us, just black and white

We need to fix this, it’s just not right.

A World without Peace

 – By Cruz

A world without peace, endless hell

No more joy, just a warning bell.

The streets smell of death and decay

All hear the bullet’s ricochet

All the leaders having a laugh

Right when their soldiers get pulverised in a blood bath.

The streets chatter once loud, now dull

Once had people but now just a skull.

All have become fear’s slave

As his rein becomes like a tidal wave

All deal with blood and gore

People drained of life at their core

Bamboo

– By Henry P

In the silence of the forest

Bamboo lies alone

It’s arms reaching out ready to be chewed on

As each leaf of nutrients gets swallowed by pandas

Against the walls of the The Great Wall of China

Cute little animals get their feeding

What a great sight to see

In misty mountains they live carefree

As the bamboo break off in three

Their sturdiness is hard to see

Young Lavender

– By Ava W

Dear young lavender

You couldn’t be happier

Your scent will travel across the plains

You journey home to the old world

Your hours of sunlight will never be drained

You will be our medicine

Your resilience will be our saviour

You will survive every drought

Your prickles will grow into leaf shaped life

You will heal us with your purple hue

Dear young lavender

You will make us happier.
