Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus - June 27th

The month of June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion that invites the faithful to reflect on the boundless and compassionate love of Christ.

The origins of this feast trace back to the 17th century, when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun, received a series of visions from Jesus. In these revelations, Jesus expressed His desire for a feast to honour His heart, a heart overflowing with love for humanity and wounded by indifference and ingratitude. The devotion quickly spread, and in 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the entire Catholic Church.

This celebration is more than a liturgical event, it is a call to contemplate the mystery of divine love. As St. John Paul II beautifully said, it reminds us of “the mystery of the love of God for the people of all times.” The Sacred Heart is not only a symbol, but a living invitation to draw closer to Christ, to trust in His mercy, and to respond with love and reparation.

Sacred Imagery and Symbols

Throughout the centuries, artists and theologians have used rich symbolism to express the meaning of the Sacred Heart:

  • The Flame – Signifies the heart that burns with unconditional love for all of humanity.
  • The Cross – Represents Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, a love that led Him to lay down His life.
  • The Crown of Thorns – Encircling the heart, it reflects the pain and suffering Jesus endured during His Passion.
  • The Wound and Blood – A reminder of the piercing of His side on the Cross, from which flowed blood and water.

These images are not just artistic expressions; they are windows into the heart of Christ, inviting us to meditate on His love and to offer our own hearts in return.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart is also a time to renew our personal commitment to Christ. Many acknowledge this day by attending Mass, receiving the Eucharist, and spending time in Eucharistic Adoration.

To acknowledge this special feast day, we will be celebrating mass on Friday 27th of June at 9:15 am.

God bless,
