MECS Secondary Fundraiser for Myanmar Earthquake Emergency Response

The delicious smell of sizzling sausages on a cold winter day drew the MECS Secondary students up to Senior School for our lunch time fundraiser on Tuesday 24 June. A grand total of $877.00 was raised on the day with proceeds being sent to Tearfund's Myanmar Earthquake Emergency Response. We are overwhelmed at the generosity of our students and to see so many willing to get involved with various jobs.

A big thank you to all students who supported the day by purchasing a sausage or can of drink. We appreciate your generosity very much.

Particular thanks to the following students who were involved in cooking, serving, money handling and empty can collection. Great teamwork guys! Thank you for helping to ensure our sausage sizzle ran smoothly.

Year 12 Students: Irin K, Grace L, Josiah S, Hepsi R, Josie M, Sebastian R, Adawt T, Lily C

Year 9 Students: Julia B, Hniang C, Rebecca Z, Biak Z, Linda H, Mariam H and Racy C (Yr 10)

Year 7 Students: Noah A, Milo W

Throughout Term 2 our Year 7 Students have been learning about 'Livability' in Humanities, exploring what makes places livable and the challenges faced by communities, such as those impacted by the recent Myanmar earthquake. As part of their learning, students have considered ways they can take action and support those in need. The Sausage Sizzle was one of the outworking responses to this classroom learning in addition to promoting and selling handmade bracelets, helping with advertising and the collection of "Cans for Community" to add to the Fundraiser total.

CSEN Cross Country

A small contingent of secondary school students had the great opportunity to compete in the 2025 CSEN Cross Country Championships. It was held on Thursday 26 June at Bundoora Park, where the best long-distance runners across the Christian school network competed. Our students braved the cold and wet conditions with great enthusiasm as they ran the long winding course against many other competitors! It was a joy hearing our students cheer each other on and give it their best. We had some notable results with multiple students taking home medals at the end of the day with their exceptionally fast runs. It was a great day out, well done MECS!

Year 8 Visual Communication Design Artwork Rotations

This semester, our Year 8 Visual Communication Design students have been exploring one of the seven MECS threads, each creating a unique poster that reflects their personal interpretation of their chosen theme. As part of the design process, students were required to apply at least three key design principles learned throughout the course, as well as incorporate their own original typography design. The result was a vibrant and diverse collection of posters, showcasing both creativity and a strong understanding of visual communication techniques.

I chose the thread of Creation Keeper because I think it’s important to look after God's creation. The beautiful work God put into our earth is just amazing. We as inhabitants of this earth should care and respect everything around us. I chose to use paint on my art work because I thought this might be a great way to blend and shape the bird's feathers so they aren’t just a splotch of colour. Carefully paying attention to every brush stroke and every blend I was able to create beautiful rainbow birds. Why rainbow? Well I chose rainbow because it shows us just how vivid and beautiful all of creation is.

I chose the thread, Awe Dweller. I chose this because it opened so many opportunities for what I could create. All I had to do was paint something beautiful and represent looking and wondering about it. I found something I was passionate about drawing, that I wouldn’t get bored with, and it worked, and I created someone looking at the world. In their eyes you could see that they were just thinking, “wow”.

I used an image of earth with a girl full of wonder as she looks at it. The world has blues, greens, and whites, whereas the girl has browns and tans. I have used colour in this way to separate the dweller from the dwelled upon.

I have used shading and value to make it look 3D and have value. Both the sea and the land have multiple colours hinted throughout the image, which hints at more detail. I have used a sponge to layer the clouds and the sponge’s holey texture makes it dotty and fluffy looking. I have used space and less detail on the face to give a break from the intense detail of the earth. I have used balance by keeping the face and the earth separate and using half the page for each.

I chose to reflect on the MECS thread of Justice Seeker because I felt that it was an important message because it is important to stand up for what is right, no matter what. I chose the Superman theme for my poster because the character represented Justice and stands up for what is right. I have used the colours of the Superman logo and my own typography to make the heading of Justice Seeker stand out. I used lines within the words to create form, and to make it appear to have a 3D texture. I think that form and colour worked in representing my chosen thread.

I have reflected my chosen thread with animals and plants, representing the beauty in fragile flowers and intelligent animals that make it crucial to take care of them. Also, in the weather, from sunshine to rain, everyone needs them: the ducks in the rain and the snakes in the sunshine. The people standing on God's hand watering the flower, indicating God guiding us to look after the beautiful nature provided for us.

I chose Creation Keeper because it reminds me to look at God’s creation and explore what he's done. I included birds to show the beauty of God, I added the sun and rain because it's what keeps his creation alive. I added a plant being watered and growing as the people on the earth and I added shapes as the creativity of God.

I chose the thread Awe Dweller because I find awe in nature and God's creation as well as just everything around us. I have reflected my chosen thread with rivers and mountains and the charm in flowers and trees. I have added all these because I think rivers are beautiful and wonderful in God's creation. The elements in my poster I think work for representing the river and trees as I find awe in them.

I chose to do the Awe dweller thread because I feel as though this specific thread relates to me because I love to admire God’s creation through my art. I love to draw nature because I love to study the small details in what makes such a beautiful world to live in. Out of all the other threads the Awe dweller is the one that I can relate to the most.

I love the verse that I used for this poster because it fits in perfectly with what I am trying to tell people through my art, “The heavens declare the glory of God: the skies proclaim the works of his hands”. It is a great reminder that God created everything so perfect with his own hands, including you and me, and he has the whole world in his hands.

I chose to use those specific colours in my artwork to show that there are many different ways you can admire God’s creation, not just in the beauty of nature but also in the creation of God’s people who are made in his image. The line that separates the two scenes shows that you can experience awe in the night and the day, not just a certain time and place, it can be wherever you are. I picked a city to show how God’s people can create beautiful structures that can reflect God’s natural beauty, and I picked the mountains to show just how beautiful and talented God is and how detailed and perfect his work is.
