Designing Small Worlds
The Art of Terrarium Design in Horticulture
This term, students in Years 7 and 9/10 Horticulture classes have been exploring the MECS thread of being awe dwellers through the fascinating world of terrarium design. As part of their learning, students studied a variety of examples online and investigated the different styles and purposes of open and closed terrariums. They learned about the importance of creating distinct layers—such as drainage, charcoal, soil, and decorative elements—and which plants thrive best in each type of environment. Each student completed their own ‘mini terrarium’ as a practice during the first couple of weeks of this term.
Once they had a solid understanding of the design process, students were tasked with creating their own large unique terrariums. Each student carefully planned their design, selecting appropriate plants, decorative features, and structural elements to bring their vision to life. After receiving approval, they brought their designs to life in class, demonstrating creativity, patience and practical horticultural skills. The finished terrariums are a testament to their thoughtful planning and hands-on learning and have brought a little greenery and joy into our school environment.
