Year 3

Last week, all the Grade 3 students came together to participate in Shout Outs. It's another way to recognise students who are doing the right thing in the class and yard, helping their peers, being respectful or trying their best in lessons!

Well done to the following students on their Shout Outs!

Back Row: Dev and Shahir (3CT), Tanmay, (3LS), Samy and Aarav (3PA)

Front Row: Winston (3AW), Alice (3LS), Pitsahyel (3AW), Trisha and Marcus (3KY).

Grade 3 Edendale Farm Excursion

On Wednesday 8th November, Grade 3 students will be attending an excursion to Edendale Community Environment Farm. At the farm students will be participating in small workshops to learn more about recycling, waste management and composting as well as completing a farm tour! This will be a great link to the things we will be learning about in the classroom over the next few weeks, and also a great way to see many of the things we speak about in a real life environment.

Students will need to bring their hats with them, and pack a water bottle and lunch box in a small bag or back pack. Weather appropriate clothing is encouraged - hopefully we have a lovely day and no rain!

We also ask that all students arrive at school no later than 8.45am. We will still meet in classrooms before we walk over to the bus!

Permission for the excursion is now open on QKR, and costs $30. Please ensure that you have paid by 30th October.

Production

Classes are continuing to work hard on learning their songs and dances for the What A Knight production on Tuesday 31st October (Grade 3 night).

Thank you to those families who ensured they brought their costumes in on Wednesday to have them checked. Hopefully you have what is required, but if your child needs something else please make sure this has been sourced before the dress rehearsal on Monday 30th October. On this day, students can wear their costumes to school - however they will need to bring their school uniform to get changed into when the dress rehearsal is over. This will ensure costumes are kept clean and tidy for the big performance!

Teachers are emailing any important production details home, so please ensure you keep an eye on your emails to make sure you stay updated with any changes!

Inquiry - Unwanted Textile Items

As part of our Inquiry Unit this term, we are exploring different types of waste and their impact on our environment. Next week, we are learning about textile waste!

Solutions to reduce textile waste going to landfill include repairing, repurposing or recycling. We are lucky enough to have found a company that repurposes and recycles textiles!

Any time next week, please bring in all your unwanted textile items from the list below to school, and they can be placed in the purpose supplied collection bin at school. We are only accepting items during Week 4.

Items being accepted are:

  • Cotton or cotton blend T-shirts
  • Sport t-shirts
  • Shoes
  • Underwear

If you'd like more information - please check out the company's website:

https://afittingconnection.com.au/accepted-textile-waste/ .

Inquiry - Resources Needed

Following on in our recycling research of textile waste, students will be asked to bring an old tshirt to school to repurpose into a tote bag. These can be of any quality or size (child or adult size), however no items with holes in them - no one wants a hole in their bag!

Poetry Writing and Reading

Year 4 students have been enjoying a Writing unit on poetry over the first few weeks of this term. As part of their unit, they have investigated a number of different poetry genres and, in doing so, analysed the many and varied language devices that are used by authors when writing poetry. The devices they have encountered include: repetition, alliteration and many forms of figurative language, such metaphors, similes and personification.

The following is an excerpt from a free verse poem by Pranav A (4PS)

Bushfires

they endanger everyone

their flames flicker

they open their malicious eyes

then they attack

spreading as if running with legs

they are danger-spreading

an innocent murderer

all because of us

we caused these horrible maniacs

Students have also been given the opportunity to recite their own poems for a small audience. This has provided great entertainment and engagement for all students as they listen to their peers vary the tone, pitch and speed of their voice to suit different styles of poetry and enhance dramatic effect.

Year 4 Melbourne Aquarium Excursion

Year 4 students will travel by bus to the Melbourne Aquarium on Friday, 10th of November. Thank you to all families who have already paid for this excursion via Qkr. Please make sure that the $31 payment is submitted by no later than the 2nd of November.

Further reminders about the excursion will be emailed by class teachers in the upcoming weeks. Please contact them if you have any further queries.

Production

Excitement levels for the upcoming production 'What a Knight' are growing as the students continue busily rehearsing their songs and dances in the lead-up to the big night on Wednesday, 1st of November (Year 4 and 6 night).

This week we held a quick costume check to ensure that students were adequately prepared with the correct dress-up items needed for the show. Thank you to all students who brought costumes in to be checked. If your child has not had their costume checked yet, please make sure they bring it to school before our dress rehearsal day on Monday, 30th of October.

Please stay tuned for more information regarding the production to be sent out via email from classroom teachers over the coming fortnight.
