Level 6 students investigated the art of Zentangles and how this way of drawing can be used to both calm our brains and to add decoration to artwork.

Students looked at animal drawings that other artists have decorated with Zentangles and completed a practise sheet to see which Zentangles were the most effective. Then came the fun of drawing a chameleon, painting the background with watercolour and sprinkling on salt to achieve the beautiful patterns and variations in colour and finally adding Zentangle designs with a black fine liner. Consideration was given to making their chameleon different to those of their classmates and this brought about imaginative characteristics such as top hats, cups of tea and baby chameleons!

Level 3 students have been exploring the artwork of Alma Thomas, an American artist. Alma was also a school teacher!

Alma worked in the field of Abstract Art and produced many famous paintings that can be admired in art galleries all around the world. Some of Alma’s work focused on radial designs and this is what Level 3 used in their designs. The students started with a circular sticker and used this sticker to help guide their radial design. Firstly, the background was coloured with quick sticks then short painted lines were added on top. Students were asked to be mindful of colours, using a dark paint colour over a lighter quick stick colour and vice versa.
