Day of the Dead

Dia De Los Muertos

On Thursday 2nd November, Epping Secondary College’s Year 7 Spanish class hosted our first ever Day of the Dead, a traditional holiday mostly observed in Mexico.

When celebrating Dia De Los Muertos, families gather to honour loved ones who have passed by building an altar with photos of the deceased, as well as offerings of their favourite foods as gifts.

The college’s drama room was transformed into a festive celebration, with help from the Languages team, the Art department, and assistance from the Library team.

The Spanish students provided photos of their loved ones that had passed to be placed on the altar as is tradition. Students, their families and staff volunteers were then entertained by music provided by our mariachis, teachers Mr Vogdanis and Mr Rifo-Inzunza, as well as Year 11 student Hadi Alao, who serenaded guests on arrival with his guitar.

We were treated all night to delicious food, with thanks to the Food Tech team and staff volunteers. Traditional Mexican cuisine, including burritos, champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate) and traditional sweet bread was enjoyed by all.

It was a very successful night that we hope to make an annual event on the Epping Secondary College calendar, and many thanks go to the massive team of staff and students who contributed to this celebration!
