Year 8 & 9

Assistant Principal's Report

As we enter the final week of the year it is a good time to reflect on the year that was 2023. In some respects the start of the year feels like yesterday, however I know how tired we all are and that it has in fact been a busy, jam packed last 12 months.

The year 8's and 9's have had in addition to their classroom-based curriculum opportunities to go on day camps, local excursions, city excursions, university visits, musical and performance-based excursions. We’ve had a school production, wide variety of interschool sport on offer (not to mention our in-school football academy). All this as well as SRC, break time clubs, homework club, after school sports and cooking clubs. Complementary to their curriculum programs we had Multicultural week, Night at the Museum and Science week and the Art show. All of this of course would not be possible without the support and enthusiasm for our WCC staff; teachers, support staff and volunteers. I’d like to express sincere gratitude for the time and effort put in by our staff that often go above and beyond what is expected.

I would also like to thank the year 8 team, Mr Nilsen, Ms Hawke, Mrs Hamilton and the year 9 team Mr Puxley, Mrs Coster and Mrs Whitfield. It takes a lot of care and patience to work in the middle years and this team has been very supportive of the students and for the team as a whole which is a real credit to them.

In addition to middle years young people, I am also responsible for the school’s student services team. This is a team that does not get enough praise and recognition. The demands on student services for mental health support, guidance and problem solving, uniform and food assistance, time out and generally just a place to see a friendly face are present all day every day. The student services core team provide a huge support to the young people of WCC and I would like to say a big thank you to Rochelle Smith (the first person you see upon walking in and the true heart of our team), Bec Kania who leads student services, Sandy Pine and Lisa Galea our wellbeing coordinators and Natasha Napiza our mental health practitioner.  This year has been particularly challenging in this space and the care and support you have extended to our students has been invaluable.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Summer break.

Year Level Leader's Report Year 8

Year 8 Report

I hope the last news letter of 2023 finds you well and surrounded by people and things that make you happy.

This year’s year 8's were the group that had their grade 5 and 6 massively disrupted due to COVID. They came to Wyndham Central College missing those years for a number or reasons. It has been am absolute pleasure and privilege to watch this cohort overcome these challenges and really gel together. I can’t wait to see this cohort do wonderful things as they move through their school year.

With the year 8's running our weekly assemblies the leadership and talent shown by our students has a been a delight to watch. At the end of each assembly we have a mini challenge game. Well done to Kaira MVP who won the most challenges. The students are so supportive of each other and it is great to see them so engaged and be LOUD but in a respectful way. Some stand out performances were from Sofia 8G who sang two musical solo’s and a cultural performance. Tina, Farmeny, Manaou, Revival and some year sevens performed a Tongan traditional dance in traditional dress which was absolutely amazing.

The night of the museum is always a big hit and this year the Science fair ran con-currently. There were so many amazing displays a big hat off to the 8B boys who hade a giant Moai head bigger than most of our students.

Ms. Walter and the arts team once again pulled off a successful musical. We had many year 8s perform in Legally blonde junior. Annabella, Eva, Eliza, Ruby, Olive, Leon, took part and should prod of their efforts.

Chris Palatsides has once again worked his magic with the Project based Learning group which many year 8’s have taken part in. The school is looking better and better due to this program. Besides beautifying the school the students who partake in this program get so much support and real life learning.

Our new soccer program has been taking off and many year 8s although not officially part of the soccer program, as it starts in year 9 this year, have been taking an active roll and representing our school with pride and purpose notching up wins against other school in our region.

Looking back over the year I can’t really fathom how the school, staff, students fit so much in.

A huge thankyou needs to go out to all the Tutor teachers and Especially Sharon Hamilton who works tirelessly to support our students. Ms Webster was our year level co-ordinator and was well deservedly given the role of Year 7 team leader. She was sorely missed at year 8 and I’d like to thank her for all the support she has given me this year and last. A very big thankyou to Ms Hawke who is the new Year level Leader Co-ordinator a literally super dooper (she love’s to hand out super doopers). Ms Taylor our assistant principle has been a massive support and deserves a big holiday or at the very least a new pair of walking shoes for the amount of steps she does walking around campus supporting our students.

Have a great break and all the best for 2024.

Merry Christmas & Best wishes

Year Level Leader's Report Year 9

It’s hard to believe it, but we are at the end of the year for our 2023 Year 9's, and what a year it has been! As the year came to an end, our students put a huge amount of effort into finishing off all their assignments and their semester exams throughout November.

These efforts were acknowledged in our celebration assembly on Friday 1st December, where a number of awards were handed out. Each tutor teacher chose 3 students to be recognised for their amazing work aligning with the college values of Respect, Cooperation and Excellence. A massive congratulations to all of the value award winners!

There have been a number of standout efforts this year, which were also celebrated during our assembly with special awards.

  • Our Challenge Champion, awarded to the student who represented their cohort in the most challenges in Assemblies, went to Long Nguyen of 9E!
  • Our Term 4 MVP (Most Valuable Pupil) went to Tayla Bloom of 9J, well done Tayla!
  • The highly coveted Year 9 student of the year was awarded to Pam Vichittavong of 9S, for receiving the most amount of student of the week nominations for 2023, well done Pam!

It has been a pleasure working with all staff and students through 2023 and on behalf of the Year 9 team, we wish all students the best of luck as they embark on their journey into senior school in 2024 and beyond!
