Tournament of Minds

A very exciting update on the Mount Alvernia Tournament of Minds journey, which concluded last fortnight at the International Finals in Melbourne.

Students performed exceptionally well, using their knowledge from the past three months to complete their challenges, work as a team and problem solve creatively. A huge congratulations to these teams who represented Mount A exceptionally well on the weekend.

Our Language Literature team ended up placing FIRST in their division making them the International Champions for 2024! An incredible achievement! There is already buzz about next year’s Tournament of Minds sign ups – keep an ear out!

Debating Workshop

Over 40 enthusiastic students gathered after school last week for a Debating workshop, run by our debating coaches and staff. The event aimed to equip participants with essential skills for the upcoming 2024 Debating season.

For new debaters, this was a chance to understand the rules and requirements of debating while experienced debaters had masterclasses on different styles of debates. Through interactive sessions and expert guidance, students honed their argumentation, point of information, and public speaking abilities, setting the stage for a successful Debating season ahead.

Model United Nations Workshop #1

Take your pick: United States, China, France, Russia or the United Kingdom. These were just some of the choices that our 2024 Year 10, 11 and 12 students had to pick from at the first of three Model United Nations workshops run during lunch times this term.   This session marked the beginning of an exciting journey to equip them with essential skills and advocacy abilities. The session was run by one of our Debating coaches and experienced Model United Nations participator, Steph, who took students through the history, purpose and fundamentals of how to participate in Model United Nations activities.

Next week’s session will have students debating and amending resolutions on the use of Artificial Intelligence from the perspective of one of the countries on the United Nations Security Council – we can’t wait to see how they go!
