Visual Arts Update

t's been a busy (and messy!) start to Term Three in the Art Room. This term we are focusing on construction, which comes with lots of hands-on learning: planning and problem-solving, spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, and resilience when the first attempt doesn't quite work. Here's a look at what each level has been creating over the past few weeks.

Foundation

Our youngest artists are building a community! Students are turning paper bags into houses, then adding trees, flowers and roads to create a large collaborative display. They're learning to identify parts of a house, use collage materials safely, and talk about their finished artwork.

Year One & Year Two

Students are designing and constructing "Shape Robots," using circles, squares, rectangles and triangles to build their own robot characters from cardboard and paper. They're sketching designs, cutting and gluing their pieces, then adding fun details like antennas, buttons and patterns. The unit wraps up with a Gallery Walk where students share their robot's name and favourite feature.

Year Three

Students are exploring 3D sculpture with their "Cardboard Cactus" project, using recycled materials to build their own standing cactus in a pot. They're planning their design, decorating cardboard pieces, then learning slot-and-tab construction techniques to bring their sculpture together. It's a great hands-on unit for creativity and problem-solving.

Year Four

Our Year 4 artists are creating "Woodland Animal" sculptures using paper mâché. They're planning their animal's shape and features, building an armature from newspaper and cardboard, and will spend the coming weeks layering paper mâché before painting and decorating their finished creatures.

Year Five/Six

Students have begun an exciting design project — building miniature rooms! They're choosing a theme (bedroom, games room, kitchen and more), planning their layout, and starting to decorate the walls and floors before moving on to construct their own miniature furniture from recycled materials.
