Life in the LRC

News from the LRC

I am sure you’re all as ready as me for the winter break. Term 2 has been a busy one, especially in the LRC with the departure of Ms Beavis and my acclimatising to being here by myself. I have created a few new displays, feel free to come in and see our new winter display as well as our fantastic new ‘Find Your Next Book’ display showcasing the book reviews of Ms Driscoll’s Year 7F class. We also have some new art to view, created by our talented Year 8s.

The upcoming break is a great time for you to rest and relax before the chaos of the last half of the year. Don’t forget to come and see me if you have any special requests, not just for the library book collection but also for the games and puzzles that are so very popular on these colder days.

Happy reading and enjoy your winter break!

Work Experience in the LRC

Hi, I’m Lucien, Library captain and aspiring physicist, and this past week I’ve been doing work experience with Mrs Ford in the library and Jarryd in the IT office. Here’s how it’s been going. It’s been an exceptional experience working under Mrs Ford in the library, I have helped make bookmarks with ‘Larry’ the laminator, I’ve been organising the fiction section (Please put books back where they belong on the shelf!), and I’ve been fixing people’s computers (Have you tried turning it off and on again?). Overall it’s been a fun and educational experience.

Moving on, the holidays are next week! (hooray!) And there are plenty of things to do that are book related for the bookworms among us. Check out your local library, that’s the Realm in Ringwood, and I will personally say that the Realm library is awesome. Check on event at a library near you here: www.yorealmurlibrary.vic.gov.au/whats-on/

That’s all I have to say for now, Happy holidays!

Book Review:  Eleanor Jones is Playing with Fire – by Mariana Edwards

Eleanor Jones has to be one of my very favourite investigators. (Even if she isn’t supposed to be investigating anything)

This book follows the path of Eleanor who, (despite being caught up in many other mysteries) is a very relatable character. I mean, what would you do if a murder took place next to your house, a large dose of arson happened, and a couple of explosions topped it all off. You would probably stay out of it. But not the nosy Eleanor, she figures out her relationships with herself and others while also trying to figure out who is lighting all these fires and very slowly crossing names off her list of suspects. I personally believe Eleanor Jones is Playing with Fire, wasn’t one of Amy Doak’s best, but it’s a perfect book if you want to be a Murder-Mystery-Reader-In-Training.

I would recommend 11 years old and up.

Warm Up with Reading This Winter Holiday!

The winter school holidays are the perfect time to relax, stay warm, and enjoy a good book. Whether you love exciting adventures, funny stories, mysteries, or fascinating facts, there are plenty of ways to make reading part of your holiday fun.

Before the holidays begin, remember to visit the LRC and borrow some books to enjoy over the break. Stocking up on books before the last day of term means you'll have plenty of exciting stories and interesting information ready to read at home.

One great activity during the holidays is to visit your local library. Libraries offer a huge range of books, magazines, audiobooks, and e-books for students of all ages. Many libraries also run special holiday programs, including reading challenges, craft activities, story times, and book clubs. These events are a fantastic way to meet other young readers and discover new books.

Why not set yourself a reading goal for the holidays? You could challenge yourself to read a certain number of books, try a new genre, or read for a set amount of time each day. Keeping a reading journal is another fun idea. Write down your favourite books, characters, and interesting facts you learn along the way.

Reading doesn't have to be done alone. Invite a friend or family member to read the same book and discuss it together. You could even start a mini book club with your friends. Sharing recommendations is a great way to find your next favourite read.

If you're feeling creative, use the books you read as inspiration for your own stories, comics, or artwork. Many authors began as enthusiastic readers who loved imagining their own adventures.

This winter holiday, make time to curl up with a good book and explore the amazing resources available through both your school library and local library. You never know where a great story might take you!
